The preceding names reveal Śrī Lalitāmbikā in Her relation with the devotee: She cherishes devotion, is reached through devotion, yields to devotion, and removes fear. The name Śāmbhavī now turns attention toward the relationship between Śambhu and His Śakti.
Śambhu is an ancient and established name of Lord Śiva. The important Śaivasiddhānta work Tattvaprakāśa gives a particularly clear account of Śambhu as the universal bestower of grace.
In this verse, aṇu denotes the individual souls bound in saṃsāra. Bhukti refers to their experience of pleasure and pain according to karma, while mukti denotes release from bondage. Jaḍavarga indicates the insentient category of pāśa, which, though not conscious in itself, performs its appointed function within the cosmic order. Śambhu provides the souls with their field of experience and ultimately liberation, while enabling the insentient principles to fulfil their respective operations.
Śrīkumāra's Tātparyadīpikā makes the intent still more explicit: “sarvānugrāhakaḥ, ataḥ kāraṇāc chambhur iti”, meaning, “He is the giver of grace to all; for this reason He is Śambhu.” The Śaiva theological force of the name Śambhu is therefore clear: He is not the benefactor of merely one soul or one class of beings, but the universal bestower of grace governing both the sentient and insentient orders.
Against this background, the direct meaning of Śāmbhavī is the feminine relational form derived from Śambhu. Its straightforward analysis is śambhor iyaṃ strī śāmbhavī: “She who is the Śakti of Śambhu is Śāmbhavī.” Here the feminine relationship need not be reduced to ordinary marital association; in the Śākta-Śaiva setting, She is the inseparable Śakti of that universally gracious Śambhu through whom grace, knowledge and activity become manifest.
The direct sense of the name may therefore be expressed as follows: “Śrī Lalitāmbikā, the inseparable Śakti of Śambhu, the universal bestower of grace, is Śāmbhavī.” The arcanā form Śāmbhavyai namaḥ means, “Salutations to that Goddess Śāmbhavī.” Grammatically, Śāmbhavyai is the feminine dative singular of Śāmbhavī.
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin gives the principal meaning of Śāmbhavī very concisely as “śambhor iyaṃ strī”: She is the Śakti of Śambhu. The Tattvaprakāśa description sarvānugrāhakaḥ Śambhuḥ Śambhu as the universal bestower of grace, gives this relationship greater depth: the Goddess is not an external power attached to the Lord, but the Supreme Śakti inseparable from His gracious potency.
Bhāskararāya then gives an alternative interpretation: “śāmbhavānām iyaṃ mātā vā” “or, She is the Mother of the Śāmbhavas.” To understand this second interpretation properly, it is useful first to consider the authenticated Śaiva usage of Śāmbhavāḥ. The word Śāmbhava fundamentally denotes one who is related to Śambhu; in Śaiva texts it is also attested as a designation for worshippers or devotees of Śambhu.
A clear example of this usage occurs in the Bhīmākhya section of the Śivarahasya. There an entire passage taught by the sage Kaśyapa is presented as Śāmbhavalakṣaṇam, “the characteristics of the Śāmbhavas.” While describing worshippers distinguished by devotion to Śiva, worship of Śiva and Śaiva observances, the text repeatedly says “te śāmbhavāḥ sadā jñeyāḥ”—“they should always be known as Śāmbhavas.” In this context, Śāmbhavāḥ clearly denotes worshippers associated with Śambhu, that is, devotees of Śiva.
Against this authenticated Śaiva usage, Bhāskararāya's “śāmbhavānām iyaṃ mātā vā” acquires a clearer sense. If Śāmbhavāḥ is understood here in this sense as worshippers of Śambhu, then Śāmbhavī is the Goddess who is the Mother of those devotees of Śambhu. The interpretation is especially meaningful: those who worship Śambhu themselves remain under the maternal grace of Śāmbhavī, who is the inseparable Śakti of Śambhu.
Bhāskararāya further notes that Śāmbhavī also occurs in certain specialised senses within Yogic and Tantric traditions. He refers to a mudrā known as Śāmbhavī in Yoga and also indicates a technical usage connected with initiation.
From the standpoint of worship, the name Śāmbhavī reminds us that Śiva and Śakti are not to be regarded as competing or independently supreme realities. Śambhu is the conscious Supreme Lord and Śāmbhavī is His inherent Śakti. The divine power through which knowledge, will, action and grace become manifest is not an external principle separated from Paramaśiva.
If Śambhu is the universal bestower of grace and Śakti is the power without which the act of grace cannot become effective, then Śāmbhavī may also be contemplated as the manifesting power of that universal grace.
For the sādhaka, the remembrance Śāmbhavyai namaḥ offers a way to understand grace not merely as an occasional boon but as a pervasive divine ordering. The Tattvaprakāśa places karmic experience through bhukti, the movement toward liberation, and the functional capacity of the principles of the world within the scope of Śambhu's universal grace. Remembering Śāmbhavī is therefore an act of humility before the inseparable Śakti of that grace.
A simple devotional attitude may accompany this name: “O Śāmbhavī, inseparable Śakti of Śambhu, the universal bestower of grace, awaken in me such discernment and surrender that I do not lose the direction of spiritual welfare amid experiences of pleasure and pain, and may ultimately recognise Your grace as the power leading toward inner elevation.”
Śāmbhavī is best understood by first understanding Śambhu. The Tattvaprakāśa describes Śambhu as the universal bestower of grace who grants bhukti and mukti to souls and functional capacity to the insentient order, while Śrīkumāra's commentary explicitly connects the name Śambhu with this universal graciousness. According to Bhāskararāya, Śāmbhavī is “the Śakti of Śambhu” and, in another sense, “the Mother of the Śāmbhavas.” Thus Śāmbhavyai namaḥ is a salutation to Śrī Lalitāmbikā as the inseparable Supreme Śakti of Śambhu, the universal bestower of grace.
