The preceding names describe Śrī Lalitāmbikā as wholly untouched by ego, delusion, possessiveness and sin. The next indication of that unconditioned divine nature is Niṣkrodhā. The point here is not merely the suppression of anger, but the absence in the Goddess of the very basis from which anger could arise. In worship, the name takes the form Niṣkrodhāyai Namaḥ.

Niṣkrodhā = niḥ + krodha. Here niḥ expresses absence, while krodha means anger or wrath. In the feminine form, Niṣkrodhā directly means “She in whom anger is absent.” Thus the literal meaning of the name is: Śrī Lalitāmbikā is entirely free from anger.

This meaning should be distinguished from the following name, Krodhaśamanī. Niṣkrodhā describes the Goddess's own nature, whereas Krodhaśamanī refers to Her gracious power of pacifying anger in the devotee. The Sahasranāma repeatedly employs such pairs: the Goddess is first declared free from a limitation and is then described as removing that limitation from Her devotees.

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya gives this name a more specific basis. His explanation is that for the Goddess there is no dveṣya, no one who is an object of hatred; therefore anger has no basis in Her. The commentary thus goes beyond saying that the Goddess merely controls anger. It establishes the absence of the hostility from which anger could arise. For Parāmbā there is ultimately no other being who is inherently hateful or unacceptable.

Meaning: None is hateful to Me, nor is anyone preferentially dear. Bhāskararāya invokes this statement of the Bhagavadgītā while explaining Niṣkrodhā. The relevant point is impartiality: where no being is an object of hatred, anger arising from hatred has no place.

This interpretation also clarifies an important distinction concerning the fierce or demon-destroying forms of the Goddess. Scriptural accounts of the Goddess opposing adharma or destroying hostile forces do not contradict the name Niṣkrodhā. Anger born of personal hatred and divine fierceness manifested for the restoration of order are not the same. The Goddess may remove evil, but to interpret this as wounded ego, revenge or personal hostility would be inconsistent with the direct import of this name.

Anger may arise as an intense reaction at a particular moment, whereas hatred can become an enduring disposition that regards someone or something as fundamentally hostile. Bhāskararāya's explanation, based on the very absence of an object of hatred, places the name at this deeper level. Parāmbā's freedom from anger is not situational self-restraint; Her nature does not contain the partisan duality that establishes another being as an intrinsically separate enemy.

From the contemplative standpoint of Śrīvidyā, Niṣkrodhā may be understood as an indication of the nature of complete Consciousness. Anger ordinarily belongs to a limited agent or experiencer whose expectations, attachments or interests encounter opposition. When Parāmbā is contemplated as all-pervading and complete, She has no deficiency to be supplied by another and no essential nature that another can injure. Her freedom from anger therefore expresses fullness and non-attachment, not passive weakness.

This contemplative indication should not be used to reduce every fierce manifestation of the Goddess to a psychological symbol. The first and secure meaning of Niṣkrodhā remains that the Goddess is free from anger. The perspective of non-duality or universal Selfhood deepens that direct meaning; it does not replace it.

For the devotee, remembrance of Niṣkrodhāyai Namaḥ is not an occasion to justify one's anger, but an invitation to examine its root. One may quietly observe which frustrated expectation produced resentment, which attachment turned another person into an opponent, and where ego interpreted an event as a personal insult. The contemplative application of this name is not artificial suppression of emotion, but refusal to nourish hatred.

One may pray to Parāmbā for discernment in moments of reaction, for speech that does not become needlessly harsh, and for a heart that remains free from hostility even when justice requires firmness. Remembrance of Niṣkrodhā therefore does not teach passivity; it becomes a discipline of keeping firmness free from hatred.

Niṣkrodhā is Śrī Lalitāmbikā in whom anger is absent because no being is inherently an object of hatred for Her. Even Her fierceness is not a reaction of personal hostility. Remembrance of this name directs the devotee towards an inner purity in which necessary firmness remains, while hatred, revenge and wounded ego are not allowed to govern the heart.

Pāpanāśinī concludes a sequence in which Śrī Lalitāmbikā is first described as herself free from anxiety, ego, delusion, possessiveness and sin, and then as the power that removes these from the individual. The immediately preceding name, Niṣpāpā, declares the Goddess to be intrinsically untouched by sin; Pāpanāśinī turns that truth towards the devotee: She is the destroyer of sin.

Pāpa + nāśinī = Pāpanāśinī. Pāpa denotes sin, unrighteous action, or the fault arising from such action, while nāśinī means “she who destroys.” The direct meaning is therefore: She who destroys sin is Pāpanāśinī. In the archana form Pāpanāśinyai namaḥ, the dative singular offers salutation to the Goddess in this aspect.

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin does not treat this name merely as general moral praise. He presents Pāpanāśinī as expressing the Goddess's power by which the devotee's sins are destroyed. His explanation connects this removal of sin with the purifying efficacy of remembrance, meditation, japa, worship and devotion directed towards the Goddess. He supports this understanding with scriptural authorities and invokes the sense of sin being consumed as an offering is consumed by fire.

An important aspect of this interpretation is that pāpa is not restricted to the idea of an external punishment. Action leaves its consequence and conditioning; the destruction of sin therefore also concerns the removal of the defiling karmic connection that binds the individual to the consequences of previous actions. The Goddess's grace is a power of purification here, but this should not be understood as permission to continue knowingly in wrongdoing. Bhāskararāya's wider exposition itself guards against treating prescribed duty and expiation as meaningless.

In the Indian religious tradition, pāpa does not mean merely a feeling of guilt. It is connected with action contrary to dharma whose consequences must be borne by the individual. To interpret Pāpanāśinī merely as one who removes a psychological sense of guilt would therefore narrow its scriptural meaning. The more direct sense is that through worship of the Goddess and Her grace, sin may be destroyed and the devotee purified.

It is therefore especially meaningful to read Niṣpāpā and Pāpanāśinī together. The first declares the eternal purity of the Goddess; the second expresses the active operation of Her grace. She who is Herself entirely untouched by sin is remembered as the power capable of freeing the individual from the bondage of sin. The proximity of these two names thus reveals both Her intrinsic nature and Her grace without requiring additional symbolism.

This direction in the Saubhāgyabhāskara is further clarified in its discussion of the Lalitāsahasranāma's phalaśruti. There Bhāskararāya connects the chanting of the divine names with the destruction of sin while preserving an important qualification: the greatness of the Sahasranāma is not a reason to abandon dharma or prescribed expiation. In particular, he rejects the idea that reciting an isolated name apart from its scripturally grounded practice automatically replaces every obligation. This caution gives Pāpanāśinī a balanced meaning: the Goddess's name is purifying, but genuine surrender does not teach disregard for dharma.

From the standpoint of contemplation, another indication may be drawn from this name. In the same sequence the Goddess is called Nirmohā, Mohanāśinī, Nirmamā and Mamatāhantrī. Delusion and the sense of egoic possession motivate action, while action in turn produces bondage. Turning towards the Goddess is therefore not only a prayer for release from past sin but also an orientation towards purifying the dispositions from which unrighteous action arises again. This contemplative indication does not replace the direct meaning of the name; it clarifies its relevance to spiritual practice.

While saying Pāpanāśinyai namaḥ, the devotee need not ask the Goddess for an irresponsible forgetting of one's actions. One may pray instead for the strength to recognise a fault, turn away from it, make amends where possible, and become established again in the path of dharma. In such prayer, divine grace and the devotee's own responsible effort are not opposed. Repentance then becomes not passive self-condemnation but a movement towards purification and correction of conduct.

Pāpanāśinī is Śrī Lalitāmbikā who is Herself sinless and who destroys the sin of the individual. The name expresses the purifying grace that proceeds from Her eternal purity. Its devotional implication is not to conceal one's faults, but to acknowledge them before the Goddess and return towards dharma, purification and corrected conduct.

In this sequence of the Sahasranāma, anxiety, ego, delusion and possessiveness are successively negated in Parāmbā. The name Niṣpāpā now makes another precise negation: pāpa is entirely absent in the Goddess. The following name, Pāpanāśinī, speaks of the destruction of the devotee's pāpa; the present name concerns only the Goddess's own sinless nature.

Niṣpāpā = niḥ + pāpā. Here niḥ conveys absence, while pāpa denotes sin, demerit or wrongdoing. Through sandhi, niḥ + pāpā becomes niṣpāpā. As a feminine adjective it qualifies Śrī Lalitāmbikā. The direct meaning is therefore: She in whom pāpa is entirely absent.

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin explains this name with exceptional brevity and precision. His statement is:

Because She is entirely devoid of pāpa, She is Niṣpāpā.

The significance of this explanation lies in its restraint. Bhāskararāya does not turn Niṣpāpā into a metaphor; he establishes its direct meaning. In the same commentary, the immediately following name Pāpanāśinī is connected with the destruction of the devotees' pāpa. The distinction is therefore clear: Niṣpāpā states the Goddess's intrinsic freedom from pāpa, whereas Pāpanāśinī describes Her destruction of pāpa.

Read among its neighbouring names, Niṣpāpā also reveals a deliberate pattern in the Sahasranāma. In this passage, Nirmohā is paired with Mohanāśinī, Nirmamā with Mamatāhantrī, and Niṣpāpā with Pāpanāśinī. The first name states the absence of a defect or limiting condition in the Goddess; the accompanying name expresses Her power to remove that bondage. In the received text, Niṣpāpā is name 166 and occurs in verse 47 of the Sahasranāma.

Only a few names earlier, Śrī Lalitāmbikā is called Nityaśuddhā. Niṣpāpā should therefore not be treated as a needless repetition of the same statement. Nityaśuddhā expresses Her purity in a broader metaphysical sense, whereas Niṣpāpā specifically negates pāpa. The language here is more precise: the moral and karmic demerit by which the individual being may become bound cannot be attributed to Parāmbā.

From the contemplative standpoint of Śrīvidyā, Niṣpāpā may be understood as pointing toward the supreme Consciousness that transcends the limited individual's sense of agency. Pāpa pertains to the individual who regards oneself as an agent, performs action and becomes related to its result. To understand Parāmbā merely at the level of such limited individuality would diminish the purport of the name. Throughout this nirguṇa sequence, the Sahasranāma progressively declares Her free from limiting adjuncts, attachment, pride, ego, delusion and possessiveness; Niṣpāpā continues that movement by negating pāpa.

For the sādhaka, remembrance of Niṣpāpā is not a reason for indifference toward one's actions, but a call to greater vigilance. While contemplating the Goddess's sinlessness, the devotee may resolve to direct conduct toward dharma, truthfulness, non-injury, compassion and purification of the inner being. Rather than concealing one's faults, recognising them, accepting responsibility and striving not to return to the same harmful action forms a more meaningful devotional response to this name.

The direct and complete meaning of Niṣpāpā is: Śrī Lalitāmbikā who is entirely free from pāpa. Bhāskararāya's concise statement, “pāparāhityān niṣpāpā”, establishes this meaning without unnecessary elaboration. Contemplating Her stainless nature, the sādhaka turns toward greater purity in action, disposition and the inner being.

Mamatāhantrī develops the sense of the immediately preceding name, Nirmamā. Nirmamā describes the Goddess as free from the limited notion of “mine,” while Mamatāhantrī presents Her as the destroyer of that possessive identification in the individual. Here mamatā should therefore not be understood merely in the modern Hindi sense of affection or tenderness; in its philosophical usage it principally denotes the cognition, “this is mine.”

Mamatā + hantrī = Mamatāhantrī. The word mamatā is grounded in mama, “mine.” Hantrī is a feminine agent noun meaning one who destroys, removes, or brings to an end. The direct meaning is therefore: She who destroys mamatā, the possessive cognition “this is mine,” is Mamatāhantrī.

The objects destroyed here are not possessions, relationships, or duties themselves; what is removed is the false sense of absolute ownership attached to them. A person may care for family, responsibly use possessions, and fulfil obligations while recognising inwardly that none of these constitutes the ultimate independent property of a separate ego. Preserving this distinction is essential to the direct meaning of the name.

भास्करराय मखिन् सौभाग्यभास्कर में ‘मम’ को “मम इदम्”, अर्थात् “यह मेरा है”, इस आकार की बुद्धि से सम्बद्ध करते हैं। वे सूचित करते हैं कि ऐसी बुद्धि भेद से बने सम्बन्ध को विषय बनाती है: एक ओर ‘मैं’, दूसरी ओर कोई भिन्न वस्तु, और फिर दोनों के बीच ‘मेरा’ होने का सम्बन्ध। अभेदस्वरूप परम तत्त्व में ऐसा पृथक्करण सम्भव नहीं; इसी आधार पर पूर्वनाम निर्ममा समझाया जाता है और ममताहन्त्री उस ममता-बुद्धि का विनाश करने वाली देवी को व्यक्त करता है। :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin relates mama to the cognition shaped as “mama idam”, “this is mine.” Such cognition apprehends a relation constituted through difference: there is an “I,” something regarded as other, and then a relationship of possession between the two. In the non-dual supreme reality such separation has no ultimate place. On this basis the preceding name Nirmamā is understood, while Mamatāhantrī denotes the Goddess who destroys this cognition of possessive identification.

A significant feature of this interpretation is that mamatā is not reduced to another word for greed. Greed is the desire to obtain or acquire more; mamatā is more fundamental, for it places the stamp of “mine” upon the body, status, ideas, relationships, possessions, or achievements already identified with oneself. The Sahasranāma treats greed separately in later names. Mamatāhantrī therefore has the distinct subject of possessive self-identification.

In the same verse, Nirahaṅkārā occurs earlier, followed later by Nirmamā and Mamatāhantrī. Philosophically, ahaṅkāra is associated with the identification “I,” whereas mamatā extends that identification into “mine.” Once the body, mind, or limited personality is taken to be the self, objects, relationships, and views connected with it readily become “mine.” Seen in this sequence, Mamatāhantrī signifies the Goddess who cuts the grasp by which the limited “I” appropriates portions of the world as its separate possession.

A passage of the Devībhāgavata strongly censures the harmful form of mamatā. That episode does not explain the name Mamatāhantrī itself, so it is properly used as a thematic parallel rather than direct evidence. There, mamatā is connected with partial attachment capable of distorting righteous judgement.

In that episode, the gods condemn their mamatā as a root of wrongdoing and a cause of harm because partisan attachment had led them into deceptive conduct. The relevant point is that once something is appropriated as “ours,” even sound judgement may become clouded by partiality.

From the contemplative standpoint of Śrīvidyā, Mamatāhantrī may be understood as the grace by which the devotee's relationship with the world is not severed, but transformed. Body, family, wealth, learning, and duties remain within ordinary life, yet they cease to be regarded as the absolute possessions of a separate ego and are instead received as responsibilities within the Goddess's wider order. What is chiefly relinquished is not the object, but the claim of ownership imposed upon it.

This also preserves the distinction between Nirmamā and Mamatāhantrī. Nirmamā describes the Goddess's own non-dual state, free from possessiveness; Mamatāhantrī describes Her power to remove binding mamatā in the individual. The first states Her nature, while the second presents the liberating effect of that truth upon the devotee.

In remembering Mamatāhantrī, the devotee may pray: “Mother, grant me the strength to protect and serve whatever has come into my life, but remove the cognition that binds it as exclusively mine.” Such an attitude does not teach escape from responsibility. It preserves service while loosening possessive entitlement, preparing the mind for gratitude in receiving and greater equanimity in separation.

Mamatāhantrī is Śrī Lalitāmbikā who destroys within the individual the difference-based possessive cognition, “mama idam, this is mine.” Through Her grace, responsibility toward the world remains, while the binding insistence of possessiveness gradually loses its hold.

The preceding names describe Śrī Lalitāmbikā as free from ego and delusion. Nirmamā removes a still subtler limitation: in Parāmbā there is no possessive cognition of “this is mine.” The name does not merely signify renunciation of objects or withdrawal from the world; it rests upon the absence of the differentiation required for a relation between “I” and “mine” to arise.

Nirmamā conveys the sense of being free from mama, “mine.” Sanskrit nirmama describes one in whom the possessive sense of “mine” or mamatā is absent; the feminine form referring to the Goddess is Nirmamā. The archana form Nirmamāyai namaḥ therefore salutes Her who is entirely free from possessiveness.

Here mamatā does not simply mean affection. It denotes the appropriating cognition by which an object, person, body, status or relationship is attached to the limited self as “mine.” The direct meaning of Nirmamā is therefore: She in whom the difference-based possessive cognition “this is mine” does not exist.

Meaning: In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya explains mama as the cognition having the form “this is mine.” Such cognition necessarily apprehends a relationship constituted by difference: there must be an “I” and something distinct that is called “mine.” Since no such difference exists in that which is non-different from Parāmbā Herself, this possessive cognition is absent in Her. Therefore She is Nirmamā.

Bhāskararāya’s explanation carries the name beyond ordinary ethical non-attachment. If all existence is non-different from the Goddess, there is nothing separate from Her that could be appropriated as “mine.” Possession becomes meaningful only after accepting a division between “I” and “this other thing.” Nirmamatā here is therefore not deprivation or lack, but the natural condition of non-dual being.

A very close and explicit scriptural use of the word nirmama occurs in the Bhagavad Gītā, where it is joined with freedom from desire, possessiveness and ego as a condition of peace. The verse is not a commentary on this Sahasranāma name, but it provides a direct thematic parallel that clarifies the spiritual sense of nirmama.

Meaning: One who has relinquished desires and moves without craving, free from the sense of “mine” and from ego, attains peace. The close association of nirmama and nirahaṅkāra is significant: ego establishes the limited “I,” while possessiveness extends that limitation into “mine.”

From the standpoint of contemplation, Nirmamā indicates that Parāśakti cannot finally be understood merely as the owner of one portion of the universe. She is the consciousness immanent in all existence; therefore the ordinary duality between an owner and an owned object cannot be ultimate in relation to Her. This is why Bhāskararāya grounds Her freedom from possessiveness in the absence of difference.

An important distinction should also be retained. Freedom from possessiveness does not mean rejection of responsibility, love or relationship. Mamatā becomes binding when relationship is enclosed by an appropriating claim such as “for me,” “under my control,” or “it cannot be without me.” The name points beyond this possessive claim, not toward absence of compassion or relationship.

For the sādhaka, Nirmamāyai namaḥ can become a subtle form of self-examination. One may observe where the tendency to call family, body, knowledge, wealth, position or even spiritual practice “mine” passes beyond care and responsibility into a claim of ownership. The essential movement is not necessarily to abandon things, but to loosen the tendency to use them to reinforce the limited “I.”

Parāmbā may be remembered with the understanding that what has been received is not proof of absolute ownership, but something accepted as grace and held with responsibility. Relationships remain, yet the grip upon them lessens; duty remains, while the pride of possession gradually becomes lighter.

Nirmamā is Parāmbā in whom the cognition “this is mine” has no place, because ultimately no separate reality stands apart from Her. Bhāskararāya explains the name through the absence of possessive cognition, which depends upon difference. For the sādhaka, its remembrance calls not for abandonment of things and relationships, but for recognising the pride of ownership within them and offering that claim at the feet of the Goddess.

Mohanāśinī naturally extends the immediately preceding name Nirmohā. Nirmohā declares that Śrī Lalitāmbikā is Herself free from delusion; Mohanāśinī turns attention towards the seeker. The same Supreme Mother is now described as the destroyer of the being's delusion. The Saubhāgyabhāskara also specifies how this destruction takes place: delusion is ended through the bestowal of the knowledge of oneness.

Moha + nāśinī = Mohanāśinī. Here moha denotes delusion by which a correct apprehension of reality becomes obscured, while nāśinī means “she who destroys.” The direct construction is: moham nāśayatīti Mohanāśinī, “She who destroys delusion is Mohanāśinī.” The form used in worship is Mohanāśinyai namaḥ.

The direct meaning of this name therefore does not concern the destruction of an external enemy. What is destroyed here is moha, the error born of ignorance that distorts the apprehension of truth. Only after establishing this direct sense is it appropriate to consider the subtler philosophical implication of the name.

Bhāskararāya Makhin gives this name a particularly precise depth. While explaining Nirmohā, he describes moha as vaicittya; he then states explicitly that, as Mohanāśinī, the Goddess destroys moha by bestowing the knowledge of oneness. Her grace here is therefore not merely the calming of a temporary mental confusion, but the illumination of that knowledge before which the fundamental error of divisive perception loses its hold.

Meaning: Moha is vaicittya; because it is absent in Her, She is Nirmohā. By bestowing the knowledge of oneness, She destroys moha, and therefore She is Mohanāśinī.

Bhāskararāya himself invokes the seventh mantra of the Īśāvāsya Upaniṣad in support of this interpretation. The Upaniṣadic passage is therefore not a remote thematic parallel but a direct scriptural foundation cited by the Saubhāgyabhāskara itself. The mantra explicitly connects the vision of oneness with the disappearance of delusion and sorrow.

Meaning: For the knower to whom all beings have become the very Self, and who beholds oneness, where can delusion remain, and where can sorrow remain?

Oneness here does not mean the physical erasure of the diversity visible in the world. It refers to the knowledge by which the underlying identity of the Self is recognised amidst many names and forms. Practical distinctions may continue to appear, but the error of taking those distinctions as ultimate reality is removed. At this point Mohanāśinī advances beyond Nirmohā: the Goddess is Herself beyond delusion, and through Her grace She leads the deluded vision of the being towards knowledge.

From the contemplative perspective of Śrīvidyā, Mohanāśinī especially reveals the Goddess as the illuminer. Moha is not treated as an independent substance that must be defeated by another object; when the light of truth becomes manifest, the basis of delusion loses its force. Bhāskararāya's expression “through the bestowal of the knowledge of oneness” is therefore significant. The Goddess does not merely suppress delusion; through the arising of knowledge She renders its cause ineffective. This insight requires no disclosure of initiation-specific mantra or restricted ritual practice.

For the seeker, the remembrance Mohanāśinyai namaḥ may become a prayer for discrimination and truthful vision. When attraction, fear, insistence, prejudice or ego prevents things from being seen as they are, the prayer to the Supreme Mother is not merely that circumstances should change, but that one's vision should be purified. To recognise the temporary as temporary, a means as a means, and the Self as fundamentally undivided in all beings is a measured contemplative orientation appropriate to this name.

Mohanāśinī is Śrī Lalitāmbikā who destroys the delusion of the individual being. The Saubhāgyabhāskara gives the key to the name with exceptional clarity: this destruction occurs through the bestowal of the knowledge of oneness. Where knowledge of the underlying unity of reality shines forth, the delusion produced by mistaken divisive vision cannot remain. Mohanāśinī is thus the manifestation of knowledge-filled grace that leads perception from delusion towards truth.

Nirmohā occurs in a sequence describing Śrī Lalitāmbikā as completely free from limitations associated with mind and individual identity. After Nirahaṅkārā, which denies egoity in Her, Nirmohā denies moha, the condition in which things are apprehended through confusion, distortion or mistaken perception. The primary statement concerns the Goddess's eternally accomplished nature.

Nirmohā = nir + moha. The prefix nir indicates absence, while moha ordinarily denotes delusion, obscuration of discernment, failure to perceive something as it truly is, or mistaking one thing for another. Thus the direct meaning of the feminine adjective Nirmohā is: She who is entirely free from delusion.

The name therefore does not merely say that the Goddess is not confused about some particular matter. Its direct sense is broader: in Her essential nature there is no ignorance or disturbance that could cause the false to be apprehended as true, or one thing to be mistaken for another.

Meaning: Bhāskararāya here explains moha as vaicittya, a condition of confused or unsettled apprehension. Because such vaicittya is absent in the Goddess, She is Nirmohā.

This concise explanation prevents moha from being reduced merely to emotional attachment. The emphasis here is upon clarity of cognition. Wherever knowing becomes distorted, objects are misconceived, or the mind becomes confused regarding truth, there is moha. Such vaicittya cannot belong to Parāmbā, who is Consciousness itself and therefore does not depend upon another cognition to illumine Her.

The immediately following name, Mohanāśinī, takes the teaching to its next stage: She who is Herself free from delusion also destroys delusion through the knowledge of unity. The distinctive emphasis of Nirmohā, however, remains Her own intrinsic freedom from moha; the destruction of the devotee's delusion belongs specifically to the next name.

The Tripurārahasya provides a useful thematic parallel for understanding the operation of delusion. It illustrates the power of ignorance through the familiar example of a snake appearing where there is actually a rope. The passage is not a direct gloss on Nirmohā, but it clarifies how ignorance can superimpose another appearance upon what is truly present and thereby generate confusion and fear.

Meaning: The power of ignorance is clearly seen in ordinary experience: it can make a rope appear as a snake and thereby produce great fear.

The purpose of this illustration is not casually to dismiss the world as “unreal.” Its subtler point is that the presence of an experience and the correct understanding of that experience are not identical. In delusion, the problem is not merely that something appears, but that its nature is wrongly apprehended. Nirmohā names the supreme Consciousness in which such misapprehension is absent.

From the standpoint of contemplation, Nirmohā may be understood as indicating the relation between knowledge and ignorance. The individual may identify the self with body, mind, memory, social roles and relationships. Calling Parāmbā Nirmohā reminds the worshipper that supreme Consciousness itself is never covered by such mistaken identification. Delusion does not alter Consciousness; it distorts the standpoint of the knower.

Freedom from moha therefore does not mean emotional emptiness or harsh indifference toward the world. With clear understanding, ordinary relationships and activities may continue, but a false notion of their nature is no longer imposed upon them. This distinction is important for practice: discernment is not an escape from life, but a clearer apprehension of reality.

The remembrance of Nirmohāyai Namaḥ may become a prayer: “O Parāmbā, grant me the discernment to see not merely under the influence of attraction and aversion, but in the light of truth. Wherever my insistence prevents me from seeing something as it is, grant clarity.” The practical inspiration of this name is not the forced suppression of emotion, but a humble readiness to distinguish confusion from reality.

Nirmohā is Śrī Lalitāmbikā in whose essential nature there is no confusion, distortion or mistaken apprehension. In Bhāskararāya's explanation, moha points to disturbance and lack of clarity in knowing; the Goddess is pure Consciousness entirely free from it. For the worshipper, this name becomes a prayer for clear discernment rather than allowing personal insistence to obscure what is true.
