In Indian philosophy, ahaṅkāra is an important metaphysical concept. In ordinary usage, the word suggests pride, arrogance or self-importance. In Sāṅkhya philosophy, however, its meaning is much broader. It is a subtle principle evolved from Prakṛti, through which the distinct notions of "I" and "mine" become established in experience.

Sāṅkhya and related Purāṇic accounts of creation describe three guṇa-dominant forms of ahaṅkāra: Vaikārika, Taijasa and Bhūtādi. This classification explains how the faculties of knowledge and action, together with the subtle foundations of the material world, evolve from the same fundamental principle of individuation.

Aham means "I". Ahaṅkāra denotes the principle through which the sense of "I" and identification with personal action and experience arise. The Sāṅkhya Kārikā defines it in terms of abhimāna. Here, abhimāna does not merely mean superiority or vanity. It means appropriating an experience or action as one's own, as in "I know", "I act" or "this belongs to me".

It is helpful to distinguish the functions of manas, buddhi and ahaṅkāra. Manas considers and coordinates alternatives concerning an object. Buddhi determines or judges it. Ahaṅkāra appropriates that determination or experience as "mine" and associates it with individual identity. All three belong to the inner cognitive apparatus, but their functions are distinct in Sāṅkhya analysis.

Manas: What is it? What are the alternatives?

Buddhi: This is what the object is; this is the determination.

Ahaṅkāra: I am knowing this; this experience is mine.

This example illustrates their different functions. In Sāṅkhya, ahaṅkāra is not the conscious Self or Puruṣa. It is an evolute of Prakṛti. Through its association with conscious Puruṣa, the otherwise insentient inner apparatus appears conscious, and the experience of individual agency arises.

In Sāṅkhya philosophy, Prakṛti is the primordial cause constituted by the three guṇas: sattva, rajas and tamas. In equilibrium, these remain balanced. In the process of manifestation, Mahat or Buddhi evolves first from Prakṛti. Ahaṅkāra evolves from Mahat and subsequently gives rise to the group of faculties and the five subtle tanmātras.

The twenty-five principles of Sāṅkhya comprise Prakṛti, Mahat, Ahaṅkāra, eleven faculties, five tanmātras, five gross elements and Puruṣa. Puruṣa is not regarded as a product of Prakṛti. It is the independent conscious principle and therefore does not appear as an evolved entity within this sequence.

All three guṇas remain present in ahaṅkāra. The predominance of one guṇa determines its characteristic form and cosmological function. Sattva is associated with illumination and the capacity for knowledge, rajas with activity and movement, and tamas with concealment, density and resistance.

These guṇas should not be reduced to moral categories such as good, bad or worse. Each has a distinct role in the cosmological explanation. Sattva provides the capacity for illumination, rajas supplies activity, and tamas is associated with the basis and limitation required for more concrete manifestation.

Vaikārika Ahaṅkāra is the sattva-dominant aspect of ahaṅkāra. The Sāṅkhya Kārikā uses the designation Vaikṛta for this aspect. It is associated with the evolution of eleven faculties responsible for knowing, experiencing and coordinating activity: five cognitive faculties, five action faculties and manas.

Five cognitive faculties: Hearing (sound), touch (tactile contact), sight (form), taste (flavour) and smell (odour).

The cognitive faculties are not simply the visible physical organs such as ears and eyes. Sāṅkhya considers them as subtle functional capacities of perception. The corresponding bodily organs provide the physical basis through which these capacities operate.

Five faculties of action: Speech, grasping, locomotion, excretion and reproductive activity.

Along with these ten faculties, manas constitutes the eleventh. Manas coordinates the objects presented through the senses and participates in the process of considering alternatives. The Sāṅkhya Kārikā regards manas as a faculty associated with both cognition and action.

Calling Vaikārika Ahaṅkāra sattva-dominant does not mean that it is egoless or identical with supreme knowledge. It remains an evolved principle within Prakṛti. Its distinguishing function concerns the emergence of the faculties of cognition and experience.

Taijasa Ahaṅkāra is dominated by rajas, the guṇa of activity, transformation and movement. In the Sāṅkhya Kārikā, its distinctive function is to provide the activity necessary for both the sattva-dominant and tamas-dominant forms of evolution.

Sattva provides the capacity for illumination, while tamas is associated with concealment and the basis of concrete manifestation. Yet the actual process of evolution requires activity. Rajas supplies that activating function. This is why the Sāṅkhya Kārikā associates Taijasa with both branches of evolution.

For example, the capacity of a cognitive faculty to apprehend its object is associated with the sattvic aspect, but its functioning also requires activity. Similarly, the evolution of the subtle tanmātras involves a principle of movement and transformation. This provides a way of understanding the role of Taijasa Ahaṅkāra.

Key distinction: In the Sāṅkhya Kārikā, Taijasa is not presented as the exclusive source of an entirely separate third group of faculties or tanmātras. Its role is to activate the evolution associated with both other groups.

Taijasa should not be identified here with the gross element of fire. In this context, it names the rajas-dominant aspect of ahaṅkāra. The manifestation of fire or tejas as a gross element belongs to a later stage of the cosmological sequence.

Bhūtādi Ahaṅkāra is the tamas-dominant aspect. The term Bhūtādi indicates the originating principle associated with the development of the elements. According to Sāṅkhya, five tanmātras evolve from it. These are not gross physical substances but subtle causal principles underlying the perceptible qualities of material existence.

Five Tanmātras: The subtle principles of sound, touch, visible form or colour, taste and smell.

It is essential to distinguish a tanmātra from an indriya. Śabda-tanmātra is the subtle causal principle of sound, whereas śrotra is the faculty that apprehends sound. Similarly, rūpa-tanmātra concerns the subtle cause of visible form, while cakṣus is the faculty of sight. One concerns the object-aspect of experience; the other concerns its apprehension.

From the five tanmātras arise the five mahābhūtas: ākāśa (space), vāyu (air), tejas or agni (fire), āpas (water) and pṛthivī (earth). Bhūtādi Ahaṅkāra thus forms the subtle causal basis of the branch of creation that eventually manifests as the gross material world.

Purāṇic cosmology describes a successive relationship between subtle qualities and the gross elements. Sound is the characteristic quality of space, touch of air, form of fire, taste of water and smell of earth. The later elements are also described as incorporating the characteristic qualities of preceding elements.

Ākāśa: Sound

Vāyu: Sound and touch

Tejas / Agni: Sound, touch and form

Water: Sound, touch, form and taste

Earth: Sound, touch, form, taste and smell

The mahābhūtas are not definitions of substances or chemical elements in modern physical science. They are broad metaphysical principles used to explain the constitution of the experienced world. Ākāśa therefore should not be reduced merely to visible empty space, nor tejas to an ordinary flame.

Vaikārika, Taijasa and Bhūtādi are not three separate souls or three unrelated egos. They are three guṇa-dominant aspects of one principle of ahaṅkāra. According to the Sāṅkhya Kārikā, the eleven faculties evolve from Vaikṛta and the five tanmātras from Bhūtādi, while Taijasa plays an activating role in both.

Meaning: The eleven faculties evolve from the sattva-dominant Vaikṛta Ahaṅkāra. The subtle elements evolve from the tamas-dominant Bhūtādi, while the rajas-dominant Taijasa contributes to both processes.

Three relationships are worth remembering. Vaikārika is primarily associated with the instruments of cognition and action. Taijasa is associated with activation and movement. Bhūtādi is associated with the subtle causes of material manifestation. This is the basic structure of the threefold classification.

Consider a flower placed before a person. The flower belongs to the gross material world. Its visible form is understood in relation to the quality associated with rūpa-tanmātra. The faculty of sight apprehends that form. Manas coordinates the experience, buddhi determines that the object is a flower, and ahaṅkāra appropriates the knowledge as "I am seeing this flower".

In this illustration, the object and its subtle causal basis may be understood in relation to the Bhūtādi branch, the faculties of apprehension to the Vaikārika branch, and the activating process to Taijasa. This is a conceptual illustration for understanding the doctrine, not a literal cosmological account of a single act of perception.

Both texts recognise the fundamental doctrine of threefold ahaṅkāra, but their descriptions of its functions are not identical in every respect. The Sāṅkhya Kārikā attributes the eleven faculties, including manas, to sattva-dominant Vaikṛta Ahaṅkāra and treats Taijasa as activating both branches of evolution.

In Viṣṇu Purāṇa, Book One, Chapter Two, the ten faculties are associated with Taijasa, while their presiding deities and manas are associated with the Vaikārika aspect. The derivation of the subtle tanmātras from Bhūtādi is also maintained.

The particular textual framework must therefore be kept in view. This page follows the Sāṅkhya Kārikā for its principal classification of the faculties and tanmātras, while explicitly identifying the distinctive account found in the Viṣṇu Purāṇa. Their differences should not be erased by treating both descriptions as verbally identical.

Are these three successive spiritual stages of ego? No. Vaikārika, Taijasa and Bhūtādi are not presented as three successive stages of spiritual progress. They classify the cosmological functions of ahaṅkāra according to the guṇas of Prakṛti.

Is sattvic ahaṅkāra completely free from ego? No. Sattva-dominant ahaṅkāra emphasises illumination and cognition, but remains ahaṅkāra. The predominance of sattva and the complete transcendence of ahaṅkāra are distinct matters.

Should tamas-dominant Bhūtādi be regarded as moral evil? No. Tamas is discussed here in relation to the subtle causes and manifestation of the material world. Reducing it to laziness, ignorance or moral wrongdoing would narrow the meaning of this metaphysical classification.

Is ahaṅkāra itself the conscious Self? Not according to Sāṅkhya. Ahaṅkāra is an evolute of Prakṛti, whereas Puruṣa is conscious and distinct from it. Discriminating between the "I"-identification arising through ahaṅkāra and the conscious principle is fundamental to the Sāṅkhya account of liberation.

The 161st name of the Śrī Lalitā Sahasranāma is Nirahaṅkārā. Its direct meaning is the Goddess who is free from ahaṅkāra. To understand this name, it is insufficient to consider only the ordinary meaning of ego as pride. In Sāṅkhya, ahaṅkāra is also a distinct principle connected with individuality and cosmic manifestation.

As a philosophical indication, this classification helps us understand Nirahaṅkārā as affirming that Śrī Lalitāmbikā is not limited by the three-guṇa-conditioned principle of ahaṅkāra. The entire process of manifestation described through Vaikārika, Taijasa and Bhūtādi does not impose any limited personal sense of doership upon Her transcendent nature.

The Sāṅkhya classification provides philosophical background for understanding the name. It should not automatically be treated as a specific verbatim explanation from Bhāskararāya Makhin's Saubhāgyabhāskara. The independent Puruṣa of Sāṅkhya and the theology of the Supreme Goddess in Śrīvidyā must also be understood within their respective philosophical frameworks.

From a contemplative perspective, this name may encourage the practitioner to observe the limited assertion of "I" that accompanies thoughts, decisions and actions. The faculties of knowledge and action may continue to function without being regarded as the possession of an independent, absolute ego. Contemplation of the Goddess as Nirahaṅkārā can nurture humility, discernment and surrender.

Vaikārika : Sattva-dominant
Evolution associated with cognition, manas and the faculties.

Taijasa : Rajas-dominant
Activity and the activation of both branches of evolution.

Bhūtādi : Tamas-dominant
Evolution of the five tanmātras and, subsequently, the gross elements.

Concluding understanding: These are three guṇa-dominant cosmological aspects of ahaṅkāra, not successive spiritual stages. The name Nirahaṅkārā reveals Śrī Lalitāmbikā as free from ahaṅkāra and transcending the limitations of Prakṛti.
