The preceding names describe Śrī Lalitāmbikā as the Supreme Reality that is free from dependence on a cause, blemish, limiting adjunct, or any higher ruler. With Nīrāgā, the exposition turns toward tendencies of the inner faculty that create bondage. The question here is whether one who is intrinsically complete can possess a craving that draws Her toward some object, experience, or attainment.
Niḥ + rāga → nīrāga; feminine form: Nīrāgā. Through visarga sandhi, niḥ + rāga takes the form nīrāga. Niḥ indicates absence or freedom from something, while rāga here denotes desire, craving, and binding attachment toward an object. The direct meaning is therefore: She who is entirely free from rāga is Nīrāgā. The form used in worship is Nīrāgāyai namaḥ.
This explanation in the Saubhāgyabhāskara identifies the centre of the name with unusual clarity. Lalitāmbikā's freedom from rāga is not a condition produced by forcibly suppressing desire. Desire arises where something not yet possessed is expected to complete an existing lack. Parāmbā is complete in Herself; therefore Her freedom from rāga expresses intrinsic fullness rather than a struggle against deficiency.
In this context Bhāskararāya also points toward removing the mistaken identification of modifications of the inner faculty with the Self, and toward relinquishing the group of inner enemies as part of spiritual discipline. Thus Nīrāgā is not merely a negative description of the Goddess; it also clarifies the distinction between the binding movements present in limited consciousness and the freedom of the Supreme Self.
In the fourteenth chapter of the Jñāna-khaṇḍa of the Tripurārahasya, while explaining the constitution of the limited individual, rāga is directly identified with tṛṣṇā, craving or thirst. The passage is not a commentary on the Sahasranāma itself, but it is particularly useful here because it clarifies the meaning of rāga within a Śākta philosophical setting closely related to Śrīvidyā.
Here rāga does not mean merely having a natural preference for something. Tṛṣṇā contains an inward insistence through which consciousness experiences itself as dependent upon some acquisition. Rāga therefore belongs to limitation. Calling Parāmbā Nīrāgā points to the Supreme Consciousness whose fullness does not depend upon obtaining, preserving, or repeatedly experiencing any object.
From the contemplative standpoint, freedom from rāga should not be mistaken for inert indifference or absence of love. Desire presupposes a sense of lack, whereas grace need not arise from lack. One who is intrinsically complete can give without needing to possess in return. Lalitāmbikā's affection, compassion, and grace toward devotees therefore do not contradict Her freedom from rāga; they do not arise from any personal deficiency seeking fulfilment.
In this sense, Nīrāgā is a name of the Goddess's freedom. Whether an object is present or absent, whether a favourable condition occurs or does not occur, Her being neither increases nor diminishes. Rāga binds the limited mind to favourable objects and conditions; Supreme Consciousness remains free from that dependence.
Remembrance of Nīrāgā does not teach the sādhaka to despise the things of life. The prayer may instead be that, while living among necessities, relationships, and cherished experiences, the inner faculty does not seek its fundamental completeness in them. When desire arises, rather than merely suppressing it, the sādhaka may discern whether it is a genuine need or a craving that makes inner peace conditional upon an external acquisition.
Offering rāga at the feet of the Goddess does not necessarily mean abandoning objects; it means purifying the tendency to become bound by them. The devotional sense of Nīrāgāyai namaḥ may be expressed as a prayer: O Parāmbā, grant such inward fullness that what is possessed does not become a ground for ego and what is unpossessed does not become a source of craving.
Nīrāgā is Parāmbā in whom rāga, in the sense of desire or craving, is absent. Bhāskararāya grounds this absence in Her avāpta-sakala-kāmatā, complete fulfilment in Herself, while the Tripurārahasya clarifies rāga as craving associated with limitation. Nīrāgatā is therefore not dry indifference, but a freedom born of fullness to which no external attainment can add anything.
