Nirāśrayā occurs within a philosophical sequence of names describing Śrī Lalitāmbikā beyond the limitations of the manifest universe. Immediately before this, She is called Niṣprapañcā. Nirāśrayā now makes clear that, as the Supreme Reality, the Goddess requires no other entity, foundation, or support for Her own existence. The name primarily denies dependence and affirms Her absolute self-subsistence.
Nirāśrayā = nir + āśrayā. Here nir conveys absence or freedom from something, while āśraya means a support or basis upon which something depends for its existence, continuance, or functioning. The direct meaning is therefore: She who has no other support and does not depend upon another reality is Nirāśrayā.
“Without support” should not be understood here in the ordinary sense of being helpless, deprived, or abandoned. An ordinary being without support may be vulnerable; Parāmbā is Nirāśrayā because there is no higher reality upon which She would need to depend. In worship, the dative form is Nirāśrayāyai namaḥ.
Bhāskararāya Makhin explains this name through a remarkably concise but decisive argument. His point is not merely that the Goddess depends upon nothing; he also gives the reason: She Herself is the support of all. For that which supports everything, a separate supporting reality cannot coherently be posited. Thus, Her independence and Her being the foundation of the universe become two aspects of the same truth.
The nearby sequence has already used the name Nirādhārā, so reducing both names to the same English or Hindi synonym would obscure an important nuance. Ādhāra can emphasize an underlying basis upon which something stands, while āśraya here brings the idea of dependent reliance more directly into view. In Nirāśrayā, the emphasis is that Parāmbā requires no other principle for Her own existence.
For the same reason, the name should not be reduced to an ordinary statement such as “the Goddess supports Herself.” That could still suggest an individual being who happens to be self-reliant. Bhāskararāya’s statement is more fundamental: She is the support of all, and therefore has no other support. The subject is ontological independence.
From the standpoint of contemplation, Nirāśrayā may be understood as pointing toward the Supreme Consciousness for whose reality no still more fundamental principle needs to be assumed. Every limited thing in the world appears dependent upon causes, conditions, and relationships. If the Supreme itself depended upon another reality, that other reality would become more fundamental. The name brings this regress to its completion in Parāmbā.
This philosophical indication does not deny the visible world or the practical supports of embodied life. Human beings depend upon food, air, earth, society, and innumerable relationships. Nirāśrayā is not a declaration of social or practical self-sufficiency for the individual; it is a name of the Supreme Reality. Confusing the level of the worshipper with that of the Goddess would obscure the scriptural meaning of the name.
For the worshipper, remembrance of Nirāśrayā is not an invitation to deny human limitations, but to recognize the final limits of all finite supports. Wealth, position, relationships, the body, and circumstances may all have legitimate value, yet they are changeable. While caring for them appropriately, the heart may place its ultimate refuge in the Goddess who Herself is bound to no other support. Such remembrance makes surrender an acknowledgement of the Supreme Ground rather than an escape from life.
Nirāśrayā is Parāmbā who requires no other support because She Herself is the support of all. The name expresses Her absolute independence and reminds the worshipper, amid all changing supports, of the Supreme Reality that is dependent upon none.
