In this sequence of the Sahasranāma, the Goddess is being described through the negation of limitations by which ordinary objects are defined. After Nityamuktā, Nirvikārā, Niṣprapañcā, Nirāśrayā, Nityaśuddhā, Nityabuddhā and Niravadyā, the name Nirantarā makes a subtle statement: in the essential nature of Parāmbā there is no interval, break or real differentiation by which She could be divided within Herself.
Nirantarā = nir + antara + ā. Here nir expresses absence, while antara may denote an intervening space, interval, interruption or difference. The feminine form is Nirantarā. Its direct meaning is therefore: She in whom there is no interval; She who is uninterrupted, indivisible and free from real differentiation. The archanā form nirantarāyai namaḥ is the feminine dative singular, “Salutations to Nirantarā.”
In ordinary usage, nirantara often means “continuously,” as when an activity proceeds without stopping. Here the sense is more fundamental. The name does not primarily describe an activity continuing through time; it points to the absence of any intervening gap, fissure or division in the Goddess Herself. Thus “eternal” or “ever-continuing” may be secondary implications, while the direct sense is closer to “without interval or difference.”
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya understands antara in senses such as interval and difference, and describes the Goddess as free from them. The distinctive point of his interpretation is that the name does not merely mean “unceasing”; it excludes the possibility of real differentiation within Brahman. In this connection he invokes the celebrated statement of the Taittirīya Upaniṣad in which even the slightest assumption of separation in Brahman becomes the ground of fear. Thus, in his exposition, Nirantarā indicates the indivisible nature of Brahman.
Vedānta commonly speaks of three kinds of difference: sajātīya-bheda, difference between members of the same class; vijātīya-bheda, difference between things of distinct classes; and svagata-bheda, internal difference among the parts of a single entity. Bhāskararāya’s explanation leads Nirantarā toward the Supreme Reality in which such real divisions find no place. The name therefore conveys more than a spatial idea of omnipresence; it declares the indivisibility of the Goddess’s essential nature.
The negation of antara here does not instruct the aspirant to erase practical distinctions among the worshipper, the world and the Goddess or to deny ordinary life. The Upaniṣadic and commentarial concern is the nature of ultimate Reality. Names, forms, relationships and worship retain their proper validity at the empirical level; yet in the Supreme Ground in which they appear, no second independent reality is admitted. This is why translating Nirantarā merely as “ever-present” leaves its philosophical force incomplete.
From the standpoint of worship, this name suggests an important harmony. The devotee lovingly worships Śrī Lalitāmbikā in a manifest form endowed with name, beauty, attributes and compassion, while the same Goddess in Her ultimate nature is not limited by any internal division. Form is Her worshipful manifestation, whereas indivisibility belongs to Her essential nature. Thus Nirantarā does not reject worship through form; it prevents the worshipped Goddess from being confined to any single form.
For this reason, the “continuity” of the name is not adequately represented as an endlessly extended line of time. Whatever continues in time is itself conceived through a succession of moments. The deeper implication of Nirantarā is consciousness that cannot be divided and confined between two moments, two regions or two objects. This philosophical indication arises from the direct meaning of the name and should not replace that literal meaning.
The remembrance nirantarāyai namaḥ may become a prayer for the aspirant: “O Parāmbā, in whose nature there is no break, raise my vision above the artificial divisions through which I imagine myself to be utterly separate and unrelated to the whole of existence.” Its contemplative purpose is not to force an imagined mystical experience, but to remain reverently aware of the Goddess as indivisible Reality. Ordinary life may continue, while one gently refrains from treating division as the final truth.
Nirantarā is She in whose essential nature no real interval or difference exists. By connecting the name with the non-dual teaching of the Upaniṣad, Bhāskararāya reveals the Goddess as indivisible Brahman. Even while worshipping Her beautiful manifest form, the devotee remembers that Parāmbā is not confined by form, place, time or internal division.
