After describing Śrī Lalitāmbikā as causeless, stainless and free from limiting adjuncts, the name Nirīśvarā presents a distinct aspect of the same absoluteness. The Goddess is not subject to the rule or control of any higher authority. The name therefore indicates Her supreme independence and sovereignty.

Nirīśvarā = nir + īśvara + ā. Here īśvara means a lord, ruler or controlling authority, while nir denotes absence. In the feminine form, Nirīśvarā directly means: She over whom there is no other lord, master or controller. In worship, its feminine dative singular form is Nirīśvarāyai namaḥ.

An important distinction must be preserved here. Nirīśvarā does not mean that Īśvara does not exist, nor that the Goddess denies Īśvara. The word is predicated of the Goddess: there is no separate or higher Lord above Her. Its direct sense is therefore the absence of any superior authority, not a denial of the principle of divinity.

In the interpretive direction of the Saubhāgyabhāskara, this name expresses the supreme status of the Goddess: there is no other overlord who commands Her. It is especially meaningful when read with the immediately preceding names Niṣkāraṇā and Nirupādhiḥ. That which does not arise from a prior cause and is not bound by any limiting adjunct cannot depend upon a still higher controller. Nirīśvarā thus makes Her unsurpassed supremacy explicit.

Here “supreme” does not merely indicate a higher rank within a hierarchy of deities. In the sequence of absolute attributes in which this name occurs, it refers to Reality whose existence, power and consciousness require no external foundation. Thus the Goddess's sovereignty is not an authority granted by another; it is inseparable from Her own nature.

In the fifteenth chapter of the first book of the Śrīmad Devībhāgavata, the Goddess addresses Viṣṇu during the cosmic dissolution with a remarkably concise declaration that directly illuminates the theological sense of this name:

Meaning: All this is indeed Myself; apart from Me there is no other eternal Reality.

This declaration is not an etymological explanation of Nirīśvarā, and therefore should not be treated as a substitute for the Sahasranāma commentary. Its value lies in thematic confirmation. If no independent eternal Reality exists apart from the Goddess, there can be no separate supreme controller standing above Her. In this sense, the Devībhāgavata passage closely supports the Śākta theological implication of the present name.

From the contemplative standpoint of Śrīvidyā, Nirīśvarā reveals a subtle distinction. At the conventional level the Goddess may be called Jagadīśvarī, Parameśvarī or Sarveśvarī because the universe is understood to be under Her sovereignty. But when inquiry reaches the Supreme itself, one may ask who could be the Lord of that Goddess. Nirīśvarā answers: no one. At the highest level She does not receive sovereignty from another centre of authority.

For this reason, the non-dual implication of the name is not merely the replacement of all other deities by one Goddess. Its subtler meaning is that no further Supreme Reality can be placed above the Supreme. The devotee contemplates Parāmbā through name and form, yet bows through that form to a Reality whose final ground need not be sought in something else.

The remembrance of Nirīśvarāyai namaḥ does not encourage the devotee to declare the limited personal will all-powerful. Rather, it directs the mind toward the Supreme ground beyond the ego. The devotee may pray: “O Parāmbā, above whom there is no other ruler, free my understanding from the false insistence that everything must remain under my control, and let me rest with reverence in You as the ultimate ground.”

Nirīśvarā is She over whom there is no other Lord, master or controller. The name reveals the Goddess's supreme independence: Her sovereignty is not derived from an external authority but is inherent in Her own transcendent nature. The devotee therefore bows to Her as the Supreme Reality that has no higher ground above it.
