Nirmohā occurs in a sequence describing Śrī Lalitāmbikā as completely free from limitations associated with mind and individual identity. After Nirahaṅkārā, which denies egoity in Her, Nirmohā denies moha, the condition in which things are apprehended through confusion, distortion or mistaken perception. The primary statement concerns the Goddess's eternally accomplished nature.
Nirmohā = nir + moha. The prefix nir indicates absence, while moha ordinarily denotes delusion, obscuration of discernment, failure to perceive something as it truly is, or mistaking one thing for another. Thus the direct meaning of the feminine adjective Nirmohā is: She who is entirely free from delusion.
The name therefore does not merely say that the Goddess is not confused about some particular matter. Its direct sense is broader: in Her essential nature there is no ignorance or disturbance that could cause the false to be apprehended as true, or one thing to be mistaken for another.
This concise explanation prevents moha from being reduced merely to emotional attachment. The emphasis here is upon clarity of cognition. Wherever knowing becomes distorted, objects are misconceived, or the mind becomes confused regarding truth, there is moha. Such vaicittya cannot belong to Parāmbā, who is Consciousness itself and therefore does not depend upon another cognition to illumine Her.
The immediately following name, Mohanāśinī, takes the teaching to its next stage: She who is Herself free from delusion also destroys delusion through the knowledge of unity. The distinctive emphasis of Nirmohā, however, remains Her own intrinsic freedom from moha; the destruction of the devotee's delusion belongs specifically to the next name.
The Tripurārahasya provides a useful thematic parallel for understanding the operation of delusion. It illustrates the power of ignorance through the familiar example of a snake appearing where there is actually a rope. The passage is not a direct gloss on Nirmohā, but it clarifies how ignorance can superimpose another appearance upon what is truly present and thereby generate confusion and fear.
The purpose of this illustration is not casually to dismiss the world as “unreal.” Its subtler point is that the presence of an experience and the correct understanding of that experience are not identical. In delusion, the problem is not merely that something appears, but that its nature is wrongly apprehended. Nirmohā names the supreme Consciousness in which such misapprehension is absent.
From the standpoint of contemplation, Nirmohā may be understood as indicating the relation between knowledge and ignorance. The individual may identify the self with body, mind, memory, social roles and relationships. Calling Parāmbā Nirmohā reminds the worshipper that supreme Consciousness itself is never covered by such mistaken identification. Delusion does not alter Consciousness; it distorts the standpoint of the knower.
Freedom from moha therefore does not mean emotional emptiness or harsh indifference toward the world. With clear understanding, ordinary relationships and activities may continue, but a false notion of their nature is no longer imposed upon them. This distinction is important for practice: discernment is not an escape from life, but a clearer apprehension of reality.
The remembrance of Nirmohāyai Namaḥ may become a prayer: “O Parāmbā, grant me the discernment to see not merely under the influence of attraction and aversion, but in the light of truth. Wherever my insistence prevents me from seeing something as it is, grant clarity.” The practical inspiration of this name is not the forced suppression of emotion, but a humble readiness to distinguish confusion from reality.
Nirmohā is Śrī Lalitāmbikā in whose essential nature there is no confusion, distortion or mistaken apprehension. In Bhāskararāya's explanation, moha points to disturbance and lack of clarity in knowing; the Goddess is pure Consciousness entirely free from it. For the worshipper, this name becomes a prayer for clear discernment rather than allowing personal insistence to obscure what is true.
