The preceding name, Niṣkalaṅkā, declares the Goddess to be free from blemish. Nirupādhiḥ carries this freedom to a subtler philosophical level. It indicates freedom from every limiting association, qualification or superimposition through which the unlimited Reality might appear limited.
Nirupādhiḥ may be understood as nir + upādhiḥ. Here nir conveys freedom or absence, while an upādhi is a limiting adjunct, associated condition or superimposed characteristic through which something appears otherwise than it truly is. Thus the direct meaning is: She who is free from every limiting adjunct is Nirupādhiḥ.
It would therefore be too narrow to translate the name merely as “bodiless.” The body can be one example of an upādhi, but the philosophical range of the term is wider. Apparent limitation through body, mind, name, form, place, time or relationship does not truly delimit the Supreme Reality. Nirupādhiḥ points to that intrinsically unconditioned nature.
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya explains an upādhi through a particularly clear analogy. An adjunct stands near something and makes its own characteristic appear to belong to that other thing. A transparent crystal placed beside a red hibiscus appears red, although redness does not belong intrinsically to the crystal. The appearance changes, but the crystal itself has not acquired that nature.
On this basis, Bhāskararāya's interpretation of Nirupādhiḥ is especially significant. Form, qualities and functions may be experienced in relation to the Goddess at the level of worship and manifestation, yet none of these limits Her supreme nature. The crystal analogy serves only to distinguish an attributed appearance from intrinsic reality. Supreme Consciousness itself remains unbound by any adjunct.
A passage from the Devī Bhāgavata Purāṇa, in the Devī Gītā section, provides a close and useful scriptural parallel. Describing Her nature before manifestation, the Goddess tells Himālaya that She is Consciousness, Awareness and the Supreme Brahman. The passage is not a commentary on the name Nirupādhiḥ, but it clarifies the transcendent nature that does not depend upon any external entity or limiting identity.
An important distinction should be preserved here. The forms, weapons, divine acts and worshipful manifestations of the Goddess need not be dismissed as unreal. Nirupādhiḥ means that Parāmbā's being is not confined to any one manifestation. The very Goddess who is worshipped in a sacred form cannot, in Her supreme nature, be exhaustively defined by any single form, state or relationship.
From the standpoint of worship, the name does not establish an opposition between the Goddess with attributes and the Supreme Reality. Śrī Lalitāmbikā becomes accessible to worship through a definite sacred form, yet Her Consciousness is not exhausted or circumscribed by that form. Just as a vessel does not truly cut space into a smaller reality, name and form may serve as means of approach for the devotee without binding the supreme nature of the Goddess. This is a contemplative implication of Her being Nirupādhiḥ.
In saying Nirupādhaye namaḥ, the devotee bows to Parāmbā as the Reality that is bound by no limiting identity. This remembrance may also awaken a humble discernment regarding oneself: body, social role, abilities, achievements and circumstances have their place in ordinary life, but they do not constitute the whole truth of the Self. Freedom from identification with adjuncts is not an escape from life, but recognition of their proper place.
Nirupādhiḥ names that supreme nature of Śrī Lalitāmbikā which no associated quality, superimposition, name, form or limitation can intrinsically alter or confine. Bhāskararāya's analogy of the crystal beside a red hibiscus makes the principle clear: an attributed colour may appear, while the intrinsic nature remains unchanged. Though Parāmbā manifests through forms, in Her essential nature She is unconditioned Supreme Consciousness.
