The preceding names describe Parāmbā as eternally pure, ever-conscious, faultless, undivided and without a prior cause. Niṣkalaṅkā expresses another precise aspect of that untainted Absolute. The primary sense here is not merely flawless outward beauty, but the complete absence of sin, fault or any real stain in the essential nature of the Goddess.

Niṣkalaṅkā = niṣ + kalaṅka. The word kalaṅka denotes a stain, blemish, fault or defilement that compromises purity. With the privative prefix niṣ, niṣkalaṅka means “having no blemish”; its feminine form is Niṣkalaṅkā. The direct meaning is therefore: She in whom no stain or blemish exists.

This should not be treated as a mere repetition of the nearby name Nirmalā. Nirmalā positively affirms purity, whereas Niṣkalaṅkā specifically denies the presence of the fault or sin by which something could be regarded as tainted. The names belong to one coherent sequence, yet each contributes a distinct shade of meaning.

भास्कररायीय अर्थ

सौभाग्यभास्कर में भास्करराय इस नाम के अर्थ को अत्यन्त संक्षेप और स्पष्टता से निश्चित करते हैं। वे यहाँ कलङ्क का विशेष अर्थ पाप ग्रहण करते हैं। इस प्रकार नाम केवल सामान्य “दोषरहितता” से आगे बढ़कर उस परमशुद्ध स्वरूप का बोध कराता है जिसे पाप स्पर्श भी नहीं करता।

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya gives this name a concise and specific interpretation: here he understands kalaṅka particularly as pāpa, sin. The name therefore points beyond a general absence of defects to the absolute purity of the Goddess, whose essential nature is never touched by sin.

Bhāskararāya explains kalaṅka here as sin: She in whom sin is entirely absent is Niṣkalaṅkā. To support this sense he invokes the Śruti expression “śuddham apāpaviddham”, pure and untouched by sin.

The words cited by Bhāskararāya occur in the eighth mantra of the Īśāvāsyopaniṣad, where the Supreme is described as free from bodily injury, impurity and contact with sin. This provides the scriptural setting in which Niṣkalaṅkā is understood as an attribute of the Goddess in Her absolute nature. Her freedom from sin is not a purity acquired through moral effort; it is the eternally accomplished purity of what She is.

The mantra describes the Supreme as all-pervading and luminous, beyond bodily limitation or injury, pure and untouched by sin, the seer, the knower, transcendent and self-existent. For the present name, the words śuddham apāpaviddham, “pure and untouched by sin,” are especially relevant.

In Sanskrit poetry, kalaṅka is also well known as the visible mark upon the moon, so Niṣkalaṅkā naturally evokes an image of perfect luminosity without a spot. Yet Bhāskararāya’s verified interpretation is not confined to that poetic image. His decisive explanation is the absence of pāpa. The lunar analogy may therefore illustrate the name, but it should not replace the commentator’s actual meaning.

From the contemplative standpoint of Śrīvidyā, the name recalls an important distinction. The individual being experiences merit and sin, purity and impurity, agency and the consequences of action; the supreme nature of Parāmbā is not defiled by these superimpositions. Innumerable conditions are experienced in the light of consciousness, yet the defects belonging to those experiences do not stain consciousness itself. Niṣkalaṅkā recalls this unattached purity.

इसी कारण निष्कलङ्का का चिन्तन दोष के अस्तित्व को नकारने या धर्म-अधर्म के भेद को मिटाने का उपदेश नहीं देता। व्यवहार में कर्म और उसका नैतिक उत्तरदायित्व यथावत् रहता है। तात्त्विक संकेत इतना है कि देवी का स्वयंप्रकाश स्वरूप उन सभी सीमित अवस्थाओं का अधिष्ठान होते हुए भी उनसे मलिन नहीं होता।

Contemplation of Niṣkalaṅkā therefore does not deny the existence of wrongdoing or erase the distinction between right and wrong. At the empirical level, action and moral responsibility remain meaningful. The philosophical indication is that the self-luminous nature of the Goddess, while supporting all limited states, is itself never stained by them.

While offering Niṣkalaṅkāyai namaḥ, the devotee may remember a purity before which there is no need to conceal one’s own faults. The name is not a ground for self-congratulation, but an invitation to sincerity: to recognise impurity in one’s actions, correct what calls for repentance and amendment, and take the stainless purity of the Goddess as an orientation for life.

Niṣkalaṅkā is Parāmbā in whom no blemish exists, especially, in Bhāskararāya’s explanation, no trace of sin. The Śruti expression śuddham apāpaviddham gives this meaning a firm scriptural foundation. Contemplating the name is remembrance of Her eternal, unattached and stainless purity, and for the devotee it becomes a prayer to orient life toward truthfulness, purity and responsibility.
