The preceding names describe Śrī Lalitāmbikā as wholly untouched by ego, delusion, possessiveness and sin. The next indication of that unconditioned divine nature is Niṣkrodhā. The point here is not merely the suppression of anger, but the absence in the Goddess of the very basis from which anger could arise. In worship, the name takes the form Niṣkrodhāyai Namaḥ.
Niṣkrodhā = niḥ + krodha. Here niḥ expresses absence, while krodha means anger or wrath. In the feminine form, Niṣkrodhā directly means “She in whom anger is absent.” Thus the literal meaning of the name is: Śrī Lalitāmbikā is entirely free from anger.
This meaning should be distinguished from the following name, Krodhaśamanī. Niṣkrodhā describes the Goddess's own nature, whereas Krodhaśamanī refers to Her gracious power of pacifying anger in the devotee. The Sahasranāma repeatedly employs such pairs: the Goddess is first declared free from a limitation and is then described as removing that limitation from Her devotees.
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya gives this name a more specific basis. His explanation is that for the Goddess there is no dveṣya, no one who is an object of hatred; therefore anger has no basis in Her. The commentary thus goes beyond saying that the Goddess merely controls anger. It establishes the absence of the hostility from which anger could arise. For Parāmbā there is ultimately no other being who is inherently hateful or unacceptable.
This interpretation also clarifies an important distinction concerning the fierce or demon-destroying forms of the Goddess. Scriptural accounts of the Goddess opposing adharma or destroying hostile forces do not contradict the name Niṣkrodhā. Anger born of personal hatred and divine fierceness manifested for the restoration of order are not the same. The Goddess may remove evil, but to interpret this as wounded ego, revenge or personal hostility would be inconsistent with the direct import of this name.
Anger may arise as an intense reaction at a particular moment, whereas hatred can become an enduring disposition that regards someone or something as fundamentally hostile. Bhāskararāya's explanation, based on the very absence of an object of hatred, places the name at this deeper level. Parāmbā's freedom from anger is not situational self-restraint; Her nature does not contain the partisan duality that establishes another being as an intrinsically separate enemy.
From the contemplative standpoint of Śrīvidyā, Niṣkrodhā may be understood as an indication of the nature of complete Consciousness. Anger ordinarily belongs to a limited agent or experiencer whose expectations, attachments or interests encounter opposition. When Parāmbā is contemplated as all-pervading and complete, She has no deficiency to be supplied by another and no essential nature that another can injure. Her freedom from anger therefore expresses fullness and non-attachment, not passive weakness.
This contemplative indication should not be used to reduce every fierce manifestation of the Goddess to a psychological symbol. The first and secure meaning of Niṣkrodhā remains that the Goddess is free from anger. The perspective of non-duality or universal Selfhood deepens that direct meaning; it does not replace it.
For the devotee, remembrance of Niṣkrodhāyai Namaḥ is not an occasion to justify one's anger, but an invitation to examine its root. One may quietly observe which frustrated expectation produced resentment, which attachment turned another person into an opponent, and where ego interpreted an event as a personal insult. The contemplative application of this name is not artificial suppression of emotion, but refusal to nourish hatred.
One may pray to Parāmbā for discernment in moments of reaction, for speech that does not become needlessly harsh, and for a heart that remains free from hostility even when justice requires firmness. Remembrance of Niṣkrodhā therefore does not teach passivity; it becomes a discipline of keeping firmness free from hatred.
Niṣkrodhā is Śrī Lalitāmbikā in whom anger is absent because no being is inherently an object of hatred for Her. Even Her fierceness is not a reaction of personal hostility. Remembrance of this name directs the devotee towards an inner purity in which necessary firmness remains, while hatred, revenge and wounded ego are not allowed to govern the heart.
