Nityabuddhā immediately follows Nityaśuddhā. The preceding name declares the Goddess to be eternally pure, while the present name reveals the knowing or conscious aspect of that same supreme reality. It does not refer to acquired learning, intellectual cleverness, or knowledge that arises from time to time, but to Consciousness whose very nature is perpetual awareness.

Padaccheda: nitya + buddhā. The form used in worship is Nityabuddhāyai namaḥ.

Nitya means eternal, continuously present through all three divisions of time. Buddhā here indicates awareness, knowing and consciousness in connection with the verbal root budh. The direct sense is therefore: She who is eternally of the nature of awareness, whose Consciousness never ceases, is Nityabuddhā. Rendering the name merely as “ever intelligent” would confine it to ordinary intellect, whereas the name concerns the more fundamental nature of Consciousness itself.

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya explains the name in exceptionally concise and decisive words: “Nityabuddhā cidrūpā”, Nityabuddhā is She whose very nature is Cit, Consciousness. The significance of this explanation is that buddhā is not treated as a changing function of the mind. The mind knows, forgets, doubts and undergoes changing states; the awareness predicated of the Goddess is not such a mental operation. She is Consciousness itself.

Bhāskararāya establishes this meaning by invoking an Upaniṣadic statement. This brings out the full force of the qualifier nitya: Consciousness is not a newly acquired property that comes into existence and later disappears. If it were produced by another cause, it could not be eternal. In the Goddess, awareness is not an attainment separate from Her being; it is Her very nature.

Meaning: The knowing nature of the knower does not perish, because it is imperishable. The passage does not mean that some external object must be mentally cognised at every moment; rather, the conscious principle that makes knowing possible does not itself cease to be.

Bhāskararāya’s use of this Śruti fixes the direction in which the name is to be understood. The word nitya in Nityabuddhā does not mean an endless continuation of the waking state. Waking, dream and deep sleep are different states of experience; the name points to the Consciousness by which the presence and change of such states are knowable. It should therefore not be reduced to the literal idea that the Goddess “never sleeps.”

A subtle distinction is important here. In ordinary usage, buddhi is the inner faculty that thinks, determines and apprehends objects. Such an intellect may at one time be clear and at another confused, may remember or forget. The name Nityabuddhā does not identify this changing instrument as the ultimate nature of the Supreme Goddess. Bhāskararāya’s word cidrūpā shows that the name points to the foundational light of Consciousness in which even the modifications of the intellect become manifest.

For the same reason, spiritual knowledge cannot be regarded here as something newly attained by the Goddess. For the sādhaka, a movement from ignorance to knowledge is meaningful because one’s vision is affected by concealment and error. To posit a prior ignorance in Parāmbā, however, would contradict the word nitya. She does not pass from an unawakened condition into awakening; awareness is beginninglessly Her nature.

From the contemplative standpoint of Śrīvidyā, Nityabuddhā invites reflection on the relation between the Goddess and Consciousness. Particular acts of seeing, hearing, remembering and thinking continually change, while the Consciousness that illumines them is not confined to the form of any one mental modification. In praising Śrī Lalitāmbikā as Nityabuddhā, attention is directed toward the fundamental principle of Cit that does not depend upon a particular state of mind.

For the sādhaka, remembrance of this name is not an encouragement to take pride in intellectual ability. Its contemplative direction is quieter: amid fluctuating thoughts, memory and forgetfulness, knowledge and ignorance, one remembers the Goddess who is eternally of the nature of Consciousness. The prayer may be that, by Her grace, the intellect becomes clear and the sādhaka does not remain confined by mistaking changing mental states for the whole of one’s being.

Nityabuddhā is Parāmbā whose nature is eternal Cit. Her awareness does not arise and perish like a momentary cognition of the mind. Bhāskararāya’s expression “Nityabuddhā cidrūpā” contains the essence of the name: Śrī Lalitāmbikā is not merely the presiding deity of knowledge, but is Herself imperishable Consciousness.
