In the preceding name, Nīrāgā, the Goddess is described as Herself free from rāga. Rāgamathanī turns the same subject toward the devotee: Parāmbā churns down the binding rāga within Her devotees. The emphasis here is therefore not on Her own detachment, but on the attenuation of the devotee's attachment through Her grace.
Rāga + mathanī = Rāgamathanī. Here rāga denotes attachment, the binding inclination of the mind toward an object, or the thirst for repeating an experienced pleasure. Mathanī is related to the verbal root √math, meaning to churn, agitate so as to break down, or destroy. Thus the direct feminine sense of Rāgamathanī is: She who churns down rāga.
Bhāskararāya Makhin relates this name directly to the devotee. The substance of his explanation is that the Goddess churns down rāga in Her devotees by granting vairāgya. Vairāgya here should therefore not be understood as withdrawal from life, relationships, or duty. Through Her grace, the compelling hold by which the mind treats a pleasure, object, or experience as its lasting refuge is weakened.
In his explanation, Bhāskararāya points toward the Pātañjala Yoga understanding of rāga among the afflictions. The Yoga Sūtra counts rāga among the five kleśas and subsequently defines it with great brevity. This prevents us from mistaking rāga here for love, affection, or devotion in general. The relevant sense is the attachment that takes hold of the mind through experienced pleasure.
A subtle distinction is necessary here. Finding something pleasant is not the same as feeling incomplete without it and being compelled to regain it. Rāga is this latter kind of hold. Thus Rāgamathanī does not mean that the Goddess produces insensibility; rather, She breaks the mind's dependence upon the objects and conditions from which it seeks pleasure.
From the contemplative standpoint, the word mathana, churning, is especially significant. Merely suppressing an attachment and weakening its underlying disposition are different states. Even under outward restraint, the mind may continue to crave the same object inwardly. Remembering Parāmbā as Rāgamathanī directs the aspirant toward a deeper inner freedom in which the mind does not expect its completeness from an object when it is present, nor lose its inner ground when that object is absent.
This name offers a simple direction for self-examination: which source of my pleasure has begun to exercise mastery over my freedom? Abandoning an object, person, status, comfort, or particular experience is not necessarily the answer. The prayer may instead be that Parāmbā churn away the inner compulsion through which a means becomes the master's master. Vairāgya then becomes not dry rejection, but right relationship and inward freedom.
Rāgamathanī is Parāmbā who grants vairāgya to the devotee and thereby churns down binding attachment. Her grace does not require the denial of life's pleasures; it brings freedom from the movement of mind that demands its completeness from them.
