The preceding name, Kaulinī, expressed Śrī Lalitāmbikā's relation to the Kaula principle. The immediately following name, Kulayoginī, makes that relation more precise. Its primary subject is not an ordinary yogic practice, but the Goddess's inseparable and eternal relation with Kula.
Kulayoginī = Kula + Yoginī. Its archana form is Kulayoginyai namaḥ.
In this context, yoga primarily means relation, conjunction, or connection. Therefore yoginī should not be reduced here to the ordinary sense of a woman practising postures, breath-control, or meditation. She whose relation with Kula is perpetual is Kulayoginī: Śrī Lalitāmbikā who is eternally connected with Kula.
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin interprets Kula here as Paraśiva and explains yoga as an eternal relation. Thus Śrī Lalitāmbikā is the Śakti whose relation with Paraśiva is not something produced at one time and destroyed at another. It is eternal and inseparable from Her very nature.
This interpretation subtly distinguishes Kulayoginī from the preceding Kaulinī. Kaulinī brings forward the Goddess's relation to Kaula or the Kula-associated principle, whereas in Kulayoginī Bhāskararāya specifically emphasizes the eternity of that relation. The name therefore points beyond affiliation with a tradition to the timeless relation of Śiva and Śakti.
Within this cluster of names, the term Kula is not confined to one ordinary dictionary sense. Bhāskararāya accepts different scriptural senses according to context. In his explanation of Kulayoginī, the decisive point is that Kula is related to Paraśiva and the Goddess is said to possess an eternal union with that Paraśiva. Śakti is therefore not treated as an entity first separate from Śiva and subsequently joined to Him.
Eternal relation means that the inseparability of Śiva and Śakti is not an event belonging to a particular moment in time. Śakti is the inherent power of manifestation of Śiva, while Śiva is not regarded as a separate, powerless entity devoid of Śakti. The name Kulayoginī presents this indivisible relation as an epithet of the Goddess. Understanding this principle is sufficient here; it should not be used to infer restricted Kaula rites, mantra arrangements, or initiation-dependent practices.
The word yoginī carries several meanings in Indian scriptural traditions. It may denote a particular class of goddesses, a woman associated with a discipline, or a being endowed with yoga or connection. In the present name, Bhāskararāya's explanation through eternal relation makes the third sense primary. The text therefore does not by itself justify identifying this name with some other Yoginī tradition or group.
From the contemplative standpoint, Kulayoginī offers a significant doctrinal indication: the Supreme cannot be adequately understood by dividing Śiva and Śakti into two mutually opposed principles. Consciousness and its power, the ground and its manifestation, stillness and pulsation are not unrelated. Contemplation of the Goddess as Kulayoginī may turn the devotee reverently toward this inseparability.
This contemplative indication should remain distinct from Bhāskararāya's direct explanation. His explicit interpretive point is the Goddess's eternal relation with Paraśiva; the devotional-philosophical implication is to remember that relation as the inseparability of Śiva and Śakti. Maintaining this distinction keeps the interpretation grounded and avoids unnecessary speculation.
For the devotee, remembrance of Kulayoginyai namaḥ may become a prayer that Parāmbā lead the intellect beyond fixation on division and external distinctions toward the fundamental truth in which the relation of Śiva and Śakti is eternal. The devotional emphasis here is not the acquisition of a secret method, but the deepening of reverence and inwardness before the Goddess's unbroken nature.
Kulayoginī is Śrī Lalitāmbikā whose relation with Paraśiva as Kula is eternal. Bhāskararāya's explanation clarifies the centre of the name: yoga here primarily signifies timeless relation rather than a yogic operation. This inseparable relation of the Goddess and Paraśiva becomes, in Śrīvidyā contemplation, a basis for remembering the unity of Śiva and Śakti.
