The preceding names repeatedly disclose Śrī Lalitāmbikā in relation to “Kula.” Immediately after Kulayoginī, the name Akulā significantly extends that sequence. Though the Goddess is present in and associated with Kula, she is not confined by a limited lineage, bodily identity, or field of practice. Bhāskararāya explains the name through both a specific yogic sense and a simple but far-reaching etymological sense.
Padaccheda: a-kulā. The privative prefix “a” is joined to “kula,” producing the feminine form Akulā. In the worship-form Akulāyai namaḥ, Akulā appears in the dative singular: “Salutations to the Goddess who is Akulā.”
The word “kula” carries several scriptural meanings, so the direct sense of Akulā becomes nuanced according to context. In a straightforward derivation, it means she who has no limiting family, lineage, or bodily genealogy. Her identity is therefore not determined by birth, ancestry, or worldly relationship. This expresses her transcendent nature and should not be reduced merely to a modern idea of freedom from social restrictions; the primary sense is ontological and scriptural.
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya first gives Akulā a specific yogic significance. He calls the thousand-petalled lotus situated above the suṣumnā “Akula” and explains that the Goddess is called Akulā because she is of its nature or abides there. Thus the name is not merely privative; “Akula” also functions as a technical designation for a particular spiritual locus.
Bhāskararāya also accepts another meaning: she for whom there is no “kula” in the sense of body, lineage, and related determinations. This is important because it reveals the transcendent force of the name. An ordinary individual is identified through body, parents, ancestry, and social relationships; Parāmbā is not a reality produced or defined by any such cause. As the supreme ground of the causal order itself, she cannot be circumscribed by bodily or genealogical identity.
The sequence of the Sahasranāma deserves attention here. After names connected with Kulāmṛta, Kula conventions, Kulāṅganā, Kulāntasthā, Kaulinī, and Kulayoginī, the Goddess is called Akulā. This does not negate the preceding Kula names. Rather, the same Power known within Kula, its tradition, and its spiritual domain is, in her supreme nature, unrestricted by every limiting determination. Her fullness accommodates both relation and transcendence.
Akulā should therefore not be understood as contradicting Kulayoginī. Kulayoginī reveals a relational mode of the Goddess, while Akulā reminds us that such relationship never becomes her limitation. Whatever name, form, locus, or tradition serves as the approach to the Goddess, her complete nature remains greater than that medium. This brief name therefore carries a subtle theological insight of Śrīvidyā.
Bhāskararāya’s identification of the upper thousand-petalled lotus of the suṣumnā as “Akula” gives the name an inward yogic dimension. Care is necessary here. This reference should not be treated as instruction in an operative practice, a procedure of piercing cakras, or initiation-dependent internal ritual. For understanding the name, it is sufficient to recognise that this upper thousand-petalled locus signifies a supreme station beyond ordinary bodily levels, with which the Goddess is identified or in which she is said to abide.
The yogic meaning and the meaning “without bodily lineage” are therefore not unrelated. The first points toward the Goddess’s supreme locus; the second states that limited bodily identity cannot be imposed upon that supreme Reality. Together they present her as worshipfully accessible within the aspirant’s field of experience while remaining intrinsically unbounded by any finite identity.
From the standpoint of contemplation, Akulā teaches an important restraint: no form apprehended by the worshipper can exhaust the Goddess. Image, name, meditation, and scriptural tradition are authentic supports of worship, yet the supreme Consciousness toward which they point is not exhausted by any one support. Akulā therefore does not create a simplistic opposition between form and formlessness; she recalls the Goddess’s infinitude within embodied worship itself.
The other side of this insight is equally necessary. Akulā does not mean rejection of tradition or disregard for scriptural discipline. The Sahasranāma has just described the Goddess as Kulasaṅketapālinī and Kulayoginī. Transcendence therefore does not mean contempt for the supporting tradition; it means recognising that the supreme Reality to which tradition leads is not smaller than the tradition itself. In this balance, reverence and insight support one another.
For the aspirant, remembrance of “Akulāyai namaḥ” can become an occasion to humble limited identities before the Goddess. Body, family, position, achievement, and social identity have their valid place in ordinary life, but they do not define the whole of spiritual truth. In worship, the aspirant may pray to fulfil the responsibilities attached to these identities without becoming inwardly bound to them through ego.
Contemplation on this name may bear fruit less through expectation of extraordinary experience and more through remembrance of the Goddess’s unbounded majesty. She whose nature transcends bodily and genealogical limitation, and whom Bhāskararāya associates with the upper “Akula,” invites the aspirant simply and safely to offer limited self-identification at the feet of Parāmbā.
Akulā is Śrī Lalitāmbikā whose supreme nature is not defined by body, lineage, or any limited “kula.” Bhāskararāya also describes her as identical with, or abiding in, the upper thousand-petalled “Akula” associated with the suṣumnā. The name therefore does not deny her relationship with Kula; it proclaims the infinitude in which all authentic relations of worship find support while none can confine her.
