The preceding name, Ṣaṭcakropari-saṃsthitā, described Śrī Lalitāmbikā as established in the Sahasrāra above the six cakras from Mūlādhāra to Ājñā. Within the same subtle yogic sequence comes Mahāsaktiḥ. It can easily be mistaken for Mahāśaktiḥ, “the Great Power,” but the received reading here has dental s, not palatal ś. Its derivation and sense are therefore different. Bhāskararāya interprets the name especially in relation to the union of Śiva and Śakti in the Sahasrāra.
Here mahā is understood in the sense of a great festival or celebration, while āsaktiḥ denotes attachment, delight, deep inclination or complete engagement. Through sandhi, “mahā + āsaktiḥ” becomes “mahāsaktiḥ.” As a feminine nominative singular expression, it qualifies the Goddess. The direct sense is therefore: She who has profound delight in the great festival. In this sequence, however, that “great festival” is not an ordinary worldly celebration but signifies the divine union of Śiva and Śakti.
Preserving this linguistic distinction is important. Mahāśaktiḥ can mean the great or supreme Power, whereas the present name Mahāsaktiḥ is analysed as “mahā + āsaktiḥ.” A change of a single consonantal sound would therefore alter the interpretive basis of the name.
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya takes “mahā” in the sense of a festival and relates that festival to the union of Śiva and Śakti occurring there. He understands “āsakti” as complete engagement or intentness. The principal Bhāskararāya-based meaning is therefore that Śrī Lalitāmbikā is wholly intent upon the great festival constituted by the supreme union of Śiva and Śakti. This interpretation naturally continues the Sahasrāra context of the preceding names.
Bhāskararāya also allows alternative derivational possibilities involving radiance and pervasive conjunction. Yet within the immediate sequence, the interpretation of the great festival as the union of Śiva and Śakti provides the clearest contextual sense. Names 105 to 108 have already described ascent to Sahasrāra, the shower of nectar, lightning-like brilliance and establishment above the six cakras; the present name turns to the Śiva-Śakti union at the culmination of that movement.
To understand this name, “union” should not be reduced to the mere spatial meeting of two independent deities. In the Śrīvidyā perspective, Śiva as the luminous principle of consciousness and Śakti as its inherent self-aware power are fundamentally inseparable. Their union is described as the culmination of a process from the standpoint of sādhana, but their separation is not the final metaphysical truth. The language of their meeting in Sahasrāra therefore also expresses the realization of non-separation from the sādhaka’s standpoint.
The ascent of Kuṇḍalinī in the preceding names is not a gross description of a physical journey. It belongs to the traditional language of the subtle body and yogic worship. Mahāsaktiḥ clarifies that the culmination of this ascent is not merely reaching a higher location, but the realization of the inseparability of Śiva and Śakti. This is why Bhāskararāya illuminates the state through the sense of a “great festival.” Its splendour lies primarily in fullness, bliss and union rather than in an external celebration.
From the contemplative standpoint, this name marks a subtle transition. At first, the sādhaka approaches the movement of Śakti, the cakras and the ascent as distinguishable stages. In the Sahasrāra context those distinctions gradually fulfil their purpose. The conception of Śakti apart from Śiva, or Śiva apart from Śakti, is no longer the final conclusion. Mahāsaktiḥ names the Goddess’s supreme delight and complete engagement in that perfect union.
This should not be treated as a compulsory physical event that every practitioner must experience in the same manner. Many subtle dimensions of Śrīvidyā practice properly depend upon initiation and the guidance of a guru. The publicly appropriate philosophical indication of the name is that supreme consciousness and its power are not joined externally; their relation is one of inherent inseparability. Practice does not manufacture that truth but refines the sādhaka’s vision toward it.
Textual precision is itself part of the meaning here. The Lalitā Sahasranāma later contains a separate name, Mahāśaktiḥ, where “śakti” plainly denotes power. The present 109th name is Mahāsaktiḥ. Therefore, simply explaining it as the Goddess possessing supreme power, though theologically valid in another context, does not give the direct meaning of this particular name. Its distinctive force lies in “āsakti” and the great festival constituted by the union of Śiva and Śakti.
For the sādhaka, Mahāsaktiḥ recalls that the fulfilment of spiritual practice does not lie merely in seeking extraordinary experiences. The heart is to move from division toward non-separation, from distraction toward collectedness, and from the notion of separateness toward the wholeness of the supreme reality. The great festival of the Goddess’s union with Śiva inspires an inwardness in which worship becomes surrender rather than display.
While offering this name in worship, one may hold a simple prayerful disposition: O Śrī Lalitāmbikā, just as Your supreme delight abides in inseparability from Śiva, may unwavering fidelity to truth, humility toward guru and śāstra, and sincere concentration in worship arise within me. May the divisions created by ego in my outer and inner life become quiet through Your remembrance and be transformed into surrender.
Mahāsaktiḥ here does not mean “the Great Power,” but derives from mahā + āsaktiḥ: Śrī Lalitāmbikā who is wholly delighted and intent upon the supreme festival constituted by the union of Śiva and Śakti. The previously described ascent of Kuṇḍalinī culminates in Sahasrāra in the realization of this non-separation. The name reminds the sādhaka that the highest direction of worship is not to reinforce division, but reverently to recognize the inherent wholeness of supreme consciousness and its power.
