The preceding name, Akulā, revealed Śrī Lalitāmbikā as the supreme principle beyond the limitations of kula. Immediately after it comes Samayāntasthā. The emphasis now is not on an external location but on the Goddess abiding within “samaya.” Bhāskararāya treats samaya as a term with interconnected senses, including inward worship, an established sacred convention, and the profound equality of Śiva and Śakti.
Samayāntasthā = samaya + antasthā. Here antasthā means one who is situated within, abides inwardly, or is established in the interior. Thus the straightforward grammatical sense may be expressed as samayasya antaḥ tiṣṭhati: She who abides within samaya.
The ordinary dictionary meanings of samaya, such as occasion or time, are not sufficient in this Śrīvidyā context. Here it functions as a technical term. The direct sense can therefore be stated cautiously as: She who abides within the established discipline, sacred convention, or innermost purport called samaya. Bhāskararāya's commentary makes the intended range of this term more precise.
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya first relates samaya to an inward mode of worship in which the object of worship is contemplated within the subtle inner space of the heart. He also explains samaya as an established sacred convention accepted by yogins. In this sense the Goddess abides “within” samaya because She is the true subject intended by that discipline and the tradition that teaches it. The practice ultimately points to the Goddess Herself.
Bhāskararāya then gives a deeper derivation, connecting samaya with equality or correspondence and explaining the mutual sameness of Śiva and Śakti. He describes five forms of this correspondence: sameness of locus, function, state, name, and form. The intent is not to present Śiva and Śakti as two wholly independent realities later joined together, but to express their inseparable relationship from several complementary standpoints.
In the same explanation, the word anta is also understood not merely as a physical end but in the sense of essential nature. Thus the subtler Bhāskararāya-based sense of Samayāntasthā is that Śrī Lalitāmbikā abides in the very essence of the equality of Śiva and Śakti. She is not merely a deity standing outside that doctrine; She is its innermost reality.
Samaya here should not be reduced to an ordinary social convention or merely to a fixed point in time. In Bhāskararāya's explanation it denotes an acknowledged mode of worship whose orientation is inward. The installation of the object of worship within the inner awareness becomes central. Yet it should not be reduced to the modern idea of a generic “mental exercise,” because Bhāskararāya connects it with a specific scriptural and yogic tradition.
This makes the element antasthā especially significant. The name does not merely associate the Goddess with practitioners of Samaya; it declares that She abides within Samaya itself. Worship, its scriptural discipline, and the truth intended by it all have the Goddess as their centre. Practice and goal may remain distinct at the practical level, yet the life of the discipline lies in the divine reality toward which it is directed.
The fivefold correspondence described by Bhāskararāya carries the name beyond the classification of a worship method into the realm of doctrine. Adhiṣṭhāna-sāmya indicates correspondence of locus, anuṣṭhāna-sāmya correspondence of divine function, avasthā-sāmya correspondence of state or activity, while nāma-sāmya and rūpa-sāmya express their mutually inseparable relation through name and form. These are best understood here as elements of Bhāskararāya's doctrinal explanation, not as independent ritual instructions.
From the Śrīvidyā standpoint, an ultimately inactive Śiva separated from Śakti, or an independent Śakti separated from Śiva, does not express the highest truth. Samayāntasthā points toward the harmony in which consciousness and its intrinsic power cease to be regarded as independent realities. Śrī Lalitāmbikā is the complete manifestation of this indivisible correspondence. The name therefore means more than simply “the Goddess who dwells in the Samaya path.”
From the standpoint of contemplation, the name offers a restrained indication that spiritual practice is not complete when the deity is regarded only as external. When the practitioner turns toward the sacred inner space, the object of worship there too is Śrī Lalitāmbikā. This does not mean identifying the ordinary ego with the Goddess; it means remembering that worship ultimately turns inward toward the divine ground of consciousness that illumines both inner and outer experience.
Likewise, the equality of Śiva and Śakti does not ask the practitioner merely to imagine an abstract principle beyond duality; it invites contemplation of the inseparability of consciousness and power in the very nature of the Goddess. No restricted ritual procedure is required to state this public doctrinal meaning. Its essential import is that Parāmbā does not merely dwell inside supreme harmony; She abides as the very essence of that harmony.
Remembering Samayāntasthāyai Namaḥ may inspire the practitioner to cultivate inwardness, discipline, and collected attention in worship. Whether the practice is outward worship or silent remembrance, the Goddess Herself should remain its centre. Methods, words, and symbols should not obscure the divine reality they are meant to serve. Discipline becomes meaningful when it makes devotion to Parāmbā steadier.
The practitioner's prayer before this name may be: O Śrī Lalitāmbikā, do not let my worship remain confined to outward action alone. Make my inner awareness pure and steady enough to remember You as the true purpose within every means of worship. Turn my understanding reverently toward Your nature as the indivisible harmony of Śiva and Śakti.
Samayāntasthā names Śrī Lalitāmbikā as abiding in the innermost reality of samaya. In Bhāskararāya's exposition, samaya denotes both inward worship and an established sacred convention, while also expressing the profound correspondence of Śiva and Śakti. The Goddess is not merely worshipped through this path; She is the supreme reality it intends, abiding as the very essence of Śiva-Śakti harmony.
