In the preceding name, Bhadrapriyā, Śrī Lalitāmbikā was described as one who loves bhadra, that which is auspicious, beneficial and excellent. The present name, Bhadramūrtiḥ, deepens that idea: auspiciousness is not merely something dear to the Goddess; her own form is auspicious. The focus therefore rests upon her intrinsically beneficent form.
Bhadra means auspicious, beneficial, excellent or conducive to welfare. Mūrti means form, visible manifestation or the embodied expression of a principle; here it should not be restricted to the modern sense of a manufactured worship-image. A natural grammatical analysis is: bhadrā mūrtir yasyāḥ sā bhadramūrtiḥ, “She whose form is auspicious.” Thus the direct meaning is: Śrī Lalitāmbikā whose very form is auspicious and beneficent.
In the interpretive direction of the Saubhāgyabhāskara, the name does not merely praise the physical beauty of the Goddess. Bhadra denotes auspiciousness and welfare, while mūrti indicates its manifest form. Auspiciousness is therefore not treated as an externally added quality of the Goddess; her very form is auspiciousness manifest. This states the responsibly supported sense of the commentary rather than presenting an unverified verbatim quotation.
In this sense, the Goddess is not called auspicious merely because of external symbols. When the very nature of a being is bhadra, her presence, grace and vision are naturally associated with welfare. The name therefore does not separate form from essence: Lalitā’s visible divine form is the worshipful manifestation of the auspicious reality expressed by the word bhadra.
These two consecutive names show a subtle progression. Bhadrapriyā expresses the Goddess’s relation to bhadra through love: auspiciousness is dear to her. Bhadramūrtiḥ brings the relation still closer: auspiciousness is not separate from her as merely an object of affection but abides in her own form. What was dear to her in the previous name now describes her very being.
For this reason, Bhadramūrti should not be reduced merely to a gentle, pleasant or beautiful facial appearance. A serene vision of the Goddess certainly suits the name, but its basis is wider. Her compassionate eyes, aruṇa radiance, sovereign dignity, four-armed form with pāśa, aṅkuśa, sugarcane bow and flower arrows, and her complete worshipful presence together give visible expression to her auspicious nature.
From an upāsanā perspective, Bhadramūrtiḥ reminds us that contemplation of Lalitā in a sacred form is not opposed to knowledge of her deeper reality. The divine form contemplated by the worshipper becomes an accessible support for recognising the Goddess’s grace and auspicious nature. The form does not confine ultimate reality; it serves as a worshipful means by which the sādhaka steadies the mind upon it. No restricted mantra, nyāsa or initiation-specific procedure is required to state this principle.
The sense of bhadra also reminds the sādhaka that worship is not intended to keep the mind occupied with images of inauspiciousness, but to orient it toward the beneficent reality fully present in the Goddess. Her auspicious form in outward worship and remembrance of her beneficent nature within both point toward the same worshipful truth.
For the sādhaka, remembrance of Bhadramūrtyai Namaḥ may become a simple prayer: O Parāmbā, direct my mind toward that bhadra whose perfect form you yourself are. May my vision recognise what is wholesome, my speech remain beneficial, and my actions avoid adding unnecessary suffering to another being. The name thus becomes both adoration of the Goddess’s auspicious form and an occasion to orient oneself toward what is truly beneficent.
Bhadramūrtiḥ directly means “She whose very form is bhadra, auspicious and beneficent.” The auspiciousness loved by the Goddess in the preceding name, Bhadrapriyā, is here shown as inseparable from her own form. Lalitā’s divine form is therefore more than an object of beauty for the sādhaka; it is the worshipful manifestation of the beneficent reality toward which devotion, contemplation and life are directed.
