The preceding names described Śrī Lalitāmbikā as Kuṇḍalinī, emphasizing her extraordinary subtlety and yogic significance. With the 112th name, Bhavānī, the hymn addresses the Goddess by an ancient and widely revered divine name. The emphasis now turns to the Supreme Śakti in her inseparable relation with Bhava, Śiva, and as the power underlying the life and existence of beings.
Bhavānī is an independent feminine divine name. Its best-known direct connection is with Bhava, a name of Śiva. Thus Bhavānī commonly means the Śakti of Bhava, or the Goddess associated with Bhava, traditionally expressed as the consort of Śiva. In the worship-form Bhavānyai namaḥ, “Bhavānyai” is the feminine dative singular: “salutations to Bhavānī.”
The word bhava is also related to the Sanskrit root bhū, “to be,” “to become,” or “to come into existence.” This derivational background allows Bhavānī also to signify the power that gives and sustains life. Thus her relation to Śiva and her life-giving character are not conflicting meanings; they reveal the same Śiva-Śakti reality from complementary perspectives.
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin does not restrict Bhavānī to a single conventional meaning. He relates Bhava to Mahādeva and recognizes the Goddess through her connection with Śiva, also drawing upon Purāṇic traditions concerning Bhava and his Śakti. Bhavānī therefore denotes not an independent power separated from Śiva, but his intrinsic Śakti.
Bhāskararāya also gives a derivational sense connecting bhava with life and interprets the Goddess as the giver of life. This prevents the name from being reduced merely to a designation of divine consorthood. The power by which beings live, by which existence proceeds, and without which no manifested becoming can occur is Bhavānī herself.
Calling Bhavānī simply “the wife of Śiva” provides an introductory meaning, but the Śrīvidyā perspective is more fundamental. Śiva's active manifestation is not conceived apart from Śakti. The capacity expressed through creation, continuity, experience, and living existence belongs to Śakti. Bhavānī is therefore the Goddess through whom bhava, existence and becoming, becomes dynamically manifest.
The name should therefore not be confined to the analogy of human marriage between Śiva and the Goddess. The traditional language of divine consorthood also carries a metaphysical meaning: the possessor of power and the power itself may be distinguished conceptually, yet their reality is inseparable. As Bhavānī, Śrī Lalitāmbikā is remembered as this indivisible Śiva-Śakti.
The life-giving sense of Bhavānī connects the name with the experience of every living being. The breathing body, the experiencing inner faculty, and embodied life illumined by consciousness do not independently produce their own existence. Remembering Bhavānī directs attention toward the supreme ground from which the capacity for life arises. “Giving life” here points beyond a single biological birth to the fundamental power that makes living existence possible.
This meaning also allows a restrained connection with the preceding description of Kuṇḍalinī. There the Goddess was presented as an exceedingly subtle power within the subtle body of the practitioner; here the same Supreme Śakti appears more broadly as the ground of life and existence. The names are not thereby collapsed into one meaning; rather, the hymn expands its vision from indwelling power to the universal Goddess.
From the standpoint of worship, Bhavānī can remind the practitioner not to regard Śiva and Śakti as competing or independent realities, but as inseparable. If Śiva is understood as being and illumination, Śakti is the manifest capacity of that very reality. Worship of Śrī Lalitāmbikā is therefore not worship of a limited power apart from the Supreme; the Goddess is the intrinsic power and experiential manifestation of that Supreme Reality.
The life-giving sense of Bhavānī may also turn the practitioner's attention from limited ego toward gratitude. Instead of regarding life merely as “mine,” one may receive it as an opportunity sustained under the Goddess's grace. This is not a prescription of any secret ritual, but a simple contemplative orientation arising from the direct and Bhāskararāya-based meanings of the name.
While saying “Bhavānyai namaḥ,” the practitioner may pray: “O Bhavānī, you are the true ground of the life I mistakenly regard as my possession. My vitality, understanding, and capacity for action are gifts sustained by you. Grant me the discernment to direct them toward truth, compassion, and remembrance of the Divine rather than ego, carelessness, and selfishness.” Devotion to this name does not reject life; it invites one to recognize life as sanctified by the presence of the Goddess.
Bhavānī is the name of Śrī Lalitāmbikā that reveals her as the inseparable Śakti of Bhava, Śiva, and as the Goddess whose power makes life and existence possible. Bhāskararāya's interpretation carries the name beyond a merely familial relationship toward the Supreme Śakti as giver of life. For the practitioner, remembrance of Bhavānī is an invitation to recognize the ultimate ground of life, contemplate the inseparability of Śiva and Śakti, and use the life received with reverence and purpose.
