The preceding name, Bhāvanāgamyā, presents Śrī Lalitāmbikā as attainable through purified contemplative awareness. Immediately afterwards, Bhavāraṇyakuṭhārikā directs attention to the bondage of saṃsāra. Here the Goddess is described as the axe that cuts through the dense forest of worldly becoming which repeatedly grows again.
Here bhava means saṃsāra, the process of transmigratory existence; araṇya means a forest; and kuṭhārikā means an axe or cutting implement. Thus bhavāraṇya is the forest of saṃsāra, and Bhavāraṇyakuṭhārikā is She who is like an axe to it. The direct meaning is: the Goddess who cuts down the dense forest of saṃsāra.
The force of the comparison lies especially in the word araṇya. Saṃsāra is not compared to a single obstacle or one tree, but to an extensive forest in which innumerable growths interconnect and obscure the path. The image of the kuṭhārikā therefore conveys a decisive power of severance.
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin explains the basis of this metaphor with great precision. Bhava, or saṃsāra, is called a forest because it is exceedingly dense and repeatedly sprouts again. The Goddess is like an axe to that forest; the name therefore signifies Her as its cutter, the One who severs the bondage of saṃsāra.
The phrase indicating repeated regrowth is distinctive in this explanation. A tree cut above the ground may sprout again if its root remains. Likewise, saṃsāra does not end merely because one external circumstance changes. As long as the cause of bondage remains, the experience of saṃsāra may reappear in another form. This recurring growth makes Bhāskararāya's forest metaphor especially apt.
In Sanskrit, bhava is also related to becoming, arising and continuing in conditioned existence. In a spiritual context it denotes the flow in which the individual remains bound through birth, experience, karmic consequence and renewed birth. The forest metaphor brings out two aspects of this condition at once: its density and its tendency to reproduce itself.
A forest does not become difficult to traverse because of a single tree. Numerous trunks, branches, creepers and recurring growth together make it dense. In the same way, saṃsāric bondage should not be reduced to one worldly object. Identification with the body, karmically formed tendencies, attachment to objects and recurring impressions reinforce one another. The literal metaphor of the name helps us understand this layered complexity.
The function of an axe is not to wander confusedly through a forest but to cut the growth that obstructs passage. Calling the Goddess Kuṭhārikā therefore presents the liberating aspect of Her grace through a powerful image. The name does not imply hatred of the world itself; what is severed is the bondage through which the individual experiences itself as confined to transmigration and limited identity.
This distinction is important. Śrī Lalitāmbikā Herself is the sovereign power underlying manifestation, so the name does not signify rejection of creation. Bhavāraṇya denotes the condition in which consciousness appears bound by causation and the cycle of birth and death, while forgetting its true freedom. Kuṭhārikā names the decisive severance of that bondage.
From the standpoint of contemplation, this name forms a meaningful sequence with the preceding Bhāvanāgamyā. Inward contemplative worship turns the aspirant toward the Goddess, and the same Goddess is here called the cutter of saṃsāric bondage. The philosophical indication is that approach to the Divine and release from bondage are not unrelated events; as awareness turns toward the highest truth, the hold of limiting attachments begins to weaken.
This indication should not be turned into a secret procedure or mechanical technique. The name itself offers a complete spiritual image: however vast and seemingly beginningless the growth of saṃsāra may appear, the grace of the Goddess is greater than its binding power. For the aspirant, the governing attitude is therefore not fear but trust in Her liberating capacity.
Remembrance of Bhavāraṇyakuṭhārikāyai Namaḥ may encourage the aspirant to look truthfully at recurring forms of bondage. A tendency that repeatedly returns, an attachment that obscures discernment, or an egoic identification that intensifies suffering may be offered at the feet of the Goddess. The prayer is that Parāmbā cut the root from which such recurrence draws strength and deepen discernment, dispassion and surrender in the aspirant.
The repetition of this name may become a prayer for freedom from saṃsāric bondage rather than an impulse to escape from life. Even while fulfilling life's responsibilities, the aspirant may remember that the deepest identity is not confined to any temporary circumstance, achievement or loss. The prayer is that the Goddess cut through the entangled branches of confusion and make the way toward truth clear.
In Bhavāraṇyakuṭhārikā, saṃsāra is compared to a dense forest that repeatedly grows again, while Śrī Lalitāmbikā is its axe. Bhāskararāya's explanation gives the image particular depth: recurring bondage points toward an underlying cause. The grace of the Goddess severs that bondage and opens the way to liberation. The name is therefore a concise and powerful declaration of Parāmbā's power to free the aspirant from saṃsāra.
