In verse 44, the name Nirguṇā, following Nirākārā and Nirākulā, takes the description of the Goddess to a deeper level. The subject here is not a particular form, weapon, action, or emotion. The name states that the supreme reality of Śrī Lalitāmbikā is not limited by the qualities through which nature, the body, and manifest objects are characterised. Its direct verbal meaning must therefore be established first, before examining how Bhāskararāya connects this freedom from qualities with the nature of consciousness.

Nirguṇā is the feminine form of nirguṇa. It may be directly understood as guṇaiḥ rahitā, one who is free from guṇas, or as one from whom limiting qualities are absent. Here nir conveys absence or transcendence, while guṇa denotes a quality or characteristic by which something is defined. In relation to Prakṛti, sattva, rajas, and tamas are its three fundamental guṇas. The direct meaning is therefore: Parāmbā is Nirguṇā because She is not bound or limited by the guṇas of Prakṛti, including sattva, rajas, and tamas.

In worship, the feminine dative singular is Nirguṇāyai, giving the form Nirguṇāyai namaḥ. “Without guṇas” does not mean deficient in excellence or possessing some lack. It means that the supreme nature of the Goddess is not constituted by an attributed characteristic and does not change when qualities change.

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin states directly: “guṇaśūnyatvān nirguṇā”, She is Nirguṇā because She is free from guṇas. The distinctive force of his explanation becomes clearer in his further statement, “guṇānāṃ śarīradharmatvena ciddharmatvābhāvācca”: qualities belong to the domain of the body and limiting conditions, and are not attributes of consciousness itself. Bhāskararāya therefore does not confine the name merely to a list of sattva, rajas, and tamas. His central point is that pure consciousness cannot be defined by qualities in the manner of the body, Prakṛti, or another limited entity.

In his explanation, Bhāskararāya himself appeals to the well-known mantra of the Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad in which the Supreme is described together as all-pervading, the inner Self, the witness, conscious, and Nirguṇa. This prevents Nirguṇa from being mistaken for an inert emptiness.

The one Supreme Deity abides within all beings, is all-pervading and the inner Self of all. He is the overseer of actions and the ground in which all beings dwell, the witness, conscious, one, and Nirguṇa. Thus Nirguṇa does not negate consciousness. It expresses the freedom of that consciousness from being confined by any limiting quality.

A natural question arises here: how can the same Goddess who is worshipped in the Sahasranāma with an aruṇa complexion, three eyes, weapons, and many auspicious attributes also be called Nirguṇā? The Devī Bhāgavata supplies a particularly close Śākta context. Speaking of the same Śakti as sā tu, it says that She is described in two modes of contemplation, Saguṇā and Nirguṇā.

The wise describe that same Goddess as twofold, Saguṇā and Nirguṇā. Her Saguṇa aspect is worshipped by the attached aspirant, while Her Nirguṇa aspect is contemplated by the dispassionate. The verse does not present two independent Goddesses, but recognises two modes of approaching the one Śakti.

There is therefore no need to treat the Sahasranāma's descriptions of divine form as contradictory to the name Nirguṇā. Form, name, weapons, beauty, and compassion are real and meaningful manifestations of the Goddess for the worshipper, yet none of them becomes the final boundary of Her supreme reality. Nirguṇā names precisely this freedom from limitation: Parāmbā is the ground of all manifestations bearing qualities, yet She is not exhausted by any particular quality.

From the standpoint of worship, Nirguṇā provides an essential reminder of transcendence. Śrīvidyā gives profound significance to the Goddess's form, names, and sacred supports of worship, yet the conscious reality of Parāmbā is not enclosed within any one of them. The form through which the aspirant approaches Her is true and worthy of worship, while this name reminds him that the supreme object of worship exceeds every conception of form, colour, place, action, and quality. Saguṇa devotion and recognition of the Nirguṇa principle therefore need not cancel one another.

For the aspirant, remembrance of Nirguṇāyai namaḥ does not demand the imagination of a blank or indeterminate entity. One may worship Śrī Lalitāmbikā in a beloved Saguṇa form while remembering that passing mental states, bodily conditions, worldly changes, and the guṇas of Prakṛti do not limit Her supreme consciousness. Such remembrance loosens narrow attachment within devotion and gives a natural place to the virāga, or gradual freedom from attachment, spoken of in the Devī Bhāgavata.

Nirguṇā is Śrī Lalitāmbikā whose conscious reality is not limited by the qualities of Prakṛti, the body, or conditioning adjuncts. The same Parāmbā is worshipped in Saguṇa form and known as the limitless Nirguṇa Reality. Her divine form is therefore a true support of worship, but never the boundary of Her infinite nature.
