In the Sahasranāma sequence, Nirākulā immediately follows Nirākārā. The preceding name declares that the Goddess is not confined to any limited form; the present name indicates that this supreme reality is intrinsically untouched by agitation, distraction, or inner conflict. The primary sense is therefore not a psychological technique for attaining calmness, but the eternally unperturbed nature of the Goddess herself.
Nirākulā may be analysed as nir + ākulā. The adjective ākula denotes one who is agitated, disturbed, confused, overwhelmed, or deprived of inner steadiness by conflicting pressures. The prefix nir indicates absence or complete freedom. Thus the direct meaning is: “She who is entirely free from agitation,” “She who is never disturbed,” or “She in whom there is no inner turmoil.”
The worship-form Nirākulāyai namaḥ is the feminine dative singular: “Salutations to the Goddess who is Nirākulā.” Its direct meaning does not depend upon the absence of difficult external circumstances. The name indicates that disturbance does not belong to the Goddess in her own essential nature.
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya understands this name from the standpoint of the supreme reality: even where association with ignorance appears, the Goddess herself is not agitated. The sense of the commentary is that agitation has departed from her, and therefore does not constitute her essential nature. This establishes an important distinction: confusion, conflict, restlessness, and distraction may appear within conditioned experience, but the consciousness that underlies them is not thereby itself disturbed.
For this reason, translating Nirākulā merely as “a very calm Goddess” is incomplete. Ordinary calmness may arise and disappear, and it may depend upon circumstances. In the interpretive direction indicated by Bhāskararāya, the name points to the unattached nature of consciousness upon which agitation may appear to be superimposed, without altering the reality of the Goddess herself.
Verse 35 of the Saundaryalaharī offers a close thematic parallel: although the Goddess becomes manifest as the mind and the five elements, her essential nature is described as consciousness and bliss. This helps illuminate the doctrinal background in which the changing states of the mind do not delimit the supreme reality of the Goddess.
Agitation is a condition of the changing inner instrument. When desire, fear, memory, doubt, attachment, and conflicting thoughts arise together, the mind may become disturbed. The doctrinal significance of Nirākulā is that the Sahasranāma does not confine the Goddess to that mental movement. The mind and its changes are illumined and known, but the consciousness by which they are known need not itself be regarded as changing with every mental modification.
Nor is it sufficient to imagine the Goddess and the world as two entirely separate things. The thematic parallel from the Saundaryalaharī states that the Goddess herself appears as the universe, including the mind. Thus Nirākulā does not require a denial of mind or world; rather, it marks the discernment that manifest agitation does not define or limit the consciousness-bliss nature of the Divine Mother.
From the contemplative standpoint of Śrīvidyā, Nirākulā offers a useful reminder: the presence of the Goddess should not be regarded as real only when the mind is perfectly quiet. A seeker's mind may sometimes be steady and sometimes restless, but the reality worshipped is not understood to increase or diminish according to the mind's temporary condition. This discernment shifts the centre of practice from “What is my present mental state?” to “What is the nature of the Goddess whom I remember?”
The name does not require a devotee to suppress emotions or become insensible to difficult circumstances. A more measured contemplative application is to acknowledge fear, anxiety, or confusion as they arise while remembering the unperturbed nature of the Divine Mother. Such remembrance helps one recognise agitation as a passing condition of the inner instrument rather than projecting it upon the Goddess herself.
While offering Nirākulāyai namaḥ, the devotee may pray that discernment is not lost while facing difficult circumstances. The arrival of inner unrest need not immediately be treated as personal failure or as proof that spiritual practice has become fruitless. Agitation is something experienced; the foundation of worship is the Goddess whose essential nature is beyond it.
The recitation of this name therefore does not promise a guaranteed worldly result. Its contemplative value lies in remembrance and surrender: “O Nirākulā, even amid the disturbances arising in my inner being, may I not forget your unperturbed nature.” Such a prayer connects the direct meaning of the name with practice without reducing its philosophical significance to a psychological slogan.
Nirākulā is Śrī Lalitāmbikā whose essential nature admits no agitation, disturbance, or confusion. In the interpretive direction of Bhāskararāya, the name distinguishes the disturbances appearing through ignorance from the unattached nature of the Goddess as consciousness. For the devotee, its essence is the remembrance of the Mother's eternally unperturbed reality even amid changing states of mind.
