Coming after Śarvāṇī, the name Śarmadāyinī directs attention towards Śrī Lalitāmbikā's grace towards Her devotees. She bestows śarma: a happiness associated not merely with momentary pleasure, but with well-being and welfare. The name centres upon that gracious disposition through which the devotee experiences true well-being in Her refuge.

Śarma means happiness, well-being or welfare, while dāyinī means “she who bestows.” The direct meaning is therefore: She who bestows happiness and well-being is Śarmadāyinī. Her form of salutation is Śarmadāyinyai namaḥ.

A linguistic distinction is important here. Santoṣa is the more direct Sanskrit term for contentment with what is available; therefore śarma should not simply be treated as a dictionary synonym for such contentment. Yet when happiness includes security, peace and well-being, its mature experience may naturally include sufficiency and freedom from a persistent sense of lack.

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin understands śarma in the sense of happiness and presents the bestowal of happiness as characteristic of the Goddess's nature. Thus Śarmadāyinī is not merely one who happens to give happiness on a particular occasion, but Parāmbā whose gracious disposition naturally tends towards the well-being of Her devotees.

To support this meaning, Bhāskararāya cites the following directly relevant statement from the Devībhāgavata:

Meaning: She bestows happiness upon Her devotees; therefore She is called Śarmadāyinī.

The word bhaktebhyaḥ, “to the devotees,” is especially significant. The name is therefore not merely a description of an abstract principle of happiness; its meaning becomes concrete within the relationship between the Goddess and the devotee. For the devotee, Her grace becomes a source of happiness and well-being.

Once the direct lexical meaning has been established, one may consider the experienced character of śarma. Human beings often associate happiness with the next possession, achievement or fulfilled desire. In such a condition, the point of “enough” continually moves further away. By contrast, one mark of wholesome happiness may be the mind's ability to rest even within the circumstances and resources presently available. One then experiences the sense that “what has been received can also be enough.”

Such sufficiency does not mean rejecting desire altogether or abandoning effort in life. One must still strive for legitimate needs, fulfil duties and seek the removal of suffering. Sufficiency means that happiness is no longer made entirely dependent upon an endless succession of fulfilled desires. The healthy distinction between need and craving, and between effort and chronic dissatisfaction, allows well-being to become more stable.

From this perspective, it would be too narrow to understand the grace of Śarmadāyinī only as “giving more.” She may promote well-being by providing what is genuinely needed, and equally by granting an inward abundance in which unnecessary feelings of deficiency become quiet. The first form of grace enriches life's circumstances; the second enriches the inner faculty through which those circumstances are experienced.

From the standpoint of contemplation, the name offers a further indication. External means have their proper place, but if every possibility of happiness depends upon some future acquisition, the aspirant cannot attain settled repose. Orientation towards Parāmbā gradually leads towards a ground in which external accumulation is no longer the sole source of happiness. This does not replace the direct meaning of śarma; it is a possible contemplative understanding of its spiritual maturation.

While repeating or remembering Śarmadāyinyai namaḥ, the aspirant's prayer need not become merely a list of desired acquisitions. One may ask the Goddess for the discernment to distinguish genuine need from desire born of dissatisfaction, for the strength to make proper effort where something is truly required, and for gratitude towards what has already been received. In such a prayer, happiness and a rightly ordered life come together.

An outward expression of worshipping this name is for the aspirant, according to one's capacity, to become a cause of śarma in the lives of others. Gentle speech, assistance, feeding others, service, protection and compassionate presence beside someone in distress are all forms of conduct consistent with remembrance of the Goddess who bestows happiness upon Her devotees.

Śarmadāyinī is the name of Śrī Lalitāmbikā as the bestower of śarma, happiness and well-being, upon Her devotees. Bhāskararāya connects this bestowal of happiness with Her gracious nature. A mature experience of such happiness may also include sufficiency: making proper effort for genuine needs without viewing life continually through the lens of deficiency. The name thus allows both outward well-being and inward repose to be understood within the grace of the Goddess.
