पूर्ववर्ती शर्मदायिनी नाम भगवती द्वारा प्रदत्त शर्म, अर्थात् सुख और कल्याण, पर केन्द्रित था। शाङ्करी में दृष्टि फल से सम्बन्ध की ओर मुड़ती है: यहाँ पराम्बा उस शङ्कर की शक्ति और सहधर्मिणी के रूप में अभिहित होती हैं जिनके नाम में स्वयं शम् का भाव निहित है।
The preceding name Śarmadāyinī centred upon śarma, happiness and well-being bestowed by the Goddess. With Śāṅkarī, the emphasis moves from the bestowed good to relationship: Parāmbā is designated as the Śakti and consort of Śaṅkara, whose own name contains the sense of śam.
पदच्छेद एवं प्रत्यक्ष अर्थ
शाङ्करी = शङ्करस्य स्त्री, शङ्करस्य शक्तिः। अर्थात् शङ्कर से सम्बन्ध रखने वाली उनकी देवी और शक्ति शाङ्करी हैं।
Śāṅkarī = the feminine counterpart of Śaṅkara, the Śakti of Śaṅkara. Thus Śāṅkarī is the Goddess and Śakti related inseparably to Śaṅkara.
The foundation of this meaning lies in the name Śaṅkara itself. In the Śrī Rudram of the Śukla Yajurveda, Rudra is saluted with the words “namaḥ śaṅkarāya ca mayaskarāya ca.” Explaining this Vedic expression, Mahīdhara states that Śaṅkara is the one who brings about śam, understood there as happiness or well-being. The familiar traditional derivation “śaṃ karotīti śaṅkaraḥ”, “He who brings about śam is Śaṅkara,” expresses this meaning succinctly.
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin further explains Śaṅkara as the maker of happiness and also gives an alternative derivational possibility connected with śam being in His hand. He then gives the decisive relational explanation: “tasya strī śāṅkarī”, “His feminine counterpart is Śāṅkarī.” The principal meaning for Bhāskararāya is therefore directly that She is the consort or Śakti of Śaṅkara.
Bhāskararāya supports this meaning with a passage from the Kālikāpurāṇa in which the Goddess speaks of obtaining a body through Dakṣa, accompanying Śambhu in feminine form, and being praised by the gods as Śāṅkarī and Rudrāṇī. The purpose of this citation is not to construct a philosophical allegory, but to establish the traditional relational meaning of the name.

In reciting Śāṅkaryai Namaḥ, the devotee bows to Parāmbā as the Śakti inseparable from Śaṅkara. The name does not confine remembrance to a request for some particular worldly good; it awakens reverence for the supreme harmony of Śiva and Śakti from which all power and welfare are understood to arise.
Śāṅkarī is the Śakti of Śaṅkara. The traditional derivation of Śaṅkara through śam, happiness and welfare, establishes the lexical background of the name; Bhāskararāya's “tasya strī śāṅkarī” states its direct relational meaning. The Saundaryalaharī deepens this relationship into the inseparability of Śiva and Śakti.
