In the name Śrīkarī, the Goddess is not confined to the bestowal of one particular form of material wealth. In Sanskrit, śrī is a richly suggestive word that can signify splendour, prosperity, auspiciousness, good fortune, excellence and honoured flourishing. The central sense of the name is therefore that through the grace of Śrī Lalitāmbikā, śrī may arise in forms appropriate to the circumstance and to the recipient.
Śrī + karī = Śrīkarī. Here śrī denotes auspicious prosperity, splendour or blessed flourishing and should not, without contextual reason, be reduced to money alone. Karī is connected with the verbal root √kṛ, “to make, bring about or accomplish.” The direct meaning is therefore: She who brings forth, confers or establishes śrī is Śrīkarī.
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin explains the name succinctly through the sense “karotīti karī, śriyaḥ karī”: karī is one who brings something about, and here She is the bringer of śrī. The emphasis therefore falls not upon possession of a fixed commodity but upon the Goddess as the power through whom śrī becomes manifest and established.
Bhāskararāya also gives a second interpretation. Recalling the name Śrīkara of Viṣṇu in the Viṣṇusahasranāma, he says “tasyeyaṃ Śrīkarī”, presenting the Goddess relationally as the feminine counterpart associated with Śrīkara Viṣṇu. This does not replace the first derivation; it is an alternative interpretation supplied by the commentary, linking both divine names through their relation to śrī.
To identify śrī exclusively with financial wealth would narrow the name. Wealth can certainly be one manifestation of śrī, but the word also carries the sense that such prosperity is auspicious, worthy and beautifying. Esteem arising from learning and virtue, the well-being of a household, successful and orderly accomplishment, beauty of life and surroundings, and sufficiency of righteous means can all fall within the range of śrī according to context. Śrīkarī is therefore better understood as the giver and source of auspicious flourishing, not as a deity promising unlimited material accumulation.
In the Āryāśataka of the Mūkapañcaśatī, Kāmākṣī is praised as a wish-fulfilling jewel that nourishes the desired fruit and as the foundation of the bliss of consciousness. The verse is not a direct explanation of Śrīkarī, but it provides a useful thematic parallel: the Goddess's grace reaches the fulfilment and nourishment of legitimate aspiration, while the same verse places its deeper foundation in conscious bliss. It therefore holds together both outward and inward dimensions of flourishing.

From a contemplative Śrīvidyā perspective, Śrīkarī suggests that in its highest sense śrī is not an object separate from the Goddess that She merely distributes from outside. The Goddess Herself is the supreme ground of beauty, auspiciousness, fullness and conscious abundance. The worth of the śrī received through Her grace is therefore measured not merely by quantity, but also by the degree to which it brings order, welfare and orientation towards the Divine into life.
Remembrance of Śrīkarī invites the devotee to reflect on the nature of śrī before asking for it. If wealth is needed, the prayer may be for righteous wealth; if learning is sought, for learning joined with humility; if honour comes, for honour joined with responsibility; and if sufficient resources are received, for their proper use. Śrī received from the Goddess is truly auspicious when it makes life more generous, disciplined and beneficial rather than merely enlarging desire.
Śrīkarī is She who brings forth and establishes śrī. This śrī is not confined to money, but extends to auspiciousness, splendour, good fortune, sufficiency and the prosperity that gives stability and worth to life. Bhāskararāya's direct explanation establishes this power of the Goddess to bring about śrī, while his alternative interpretation connects the name with Viṣṇu as Śrīkara. For the devotee, the prayer within this name is that whatever prosperity is received may make both inner life and outward conduct increasingly auspicious.
