The preceding names describe Śrī Lalitāmbikā as free from ego and delusion. Nirmamā removes a still subtler limitation: in Parāmbā there is no possessive cognition of “this is mine.” The name does not merely signify renunciation of objects or withdrawal from the world; it rests upon the absence of the differentiation required for a relation between “I” and “mine” to arise.
Nirmamā conveys the sense of being free from mama, “mine.” Sanskrit nirmama describes one in whom the possessive sense of “mine” or mamatā is absent; the feminine form referring to the Goddess is Nirmamā. The archana form Nirmamāyai namaḥ therefore salutes Her who is entirely free from possessiveness.
Here mamatā does not simply mean affection. It denotes the appropriating cognition by which an object, person, body, status or relationship is attached to the limited self as “mine.” The direct meaning of Nirmamā is therefore: She in whom the difference-based possessive cognition “this is mine” does not exist.
Bhāskararāya’s explanation carries the name beyond ordinary ethical non-attachment. If all existence is non-different from the Goddess, there is nothing separate from Her that could be appropriated as “mine.” Possession becomes meaningful only after accepting a division between “I” and “this other thing.” Nirmamatā here is therefore not deprivation or lack, but the natural condition of non-dual being.
A very close and explicit scriptural use of the word nirmama occurs in the Bhagavad Gītā, where it is joined with freedom from desire, possessiveness and ego as a condition of peace. The verse is not a commentary on this Sahasranāma name, but it provides a direct thematic parallel that clarifies the spiritual sense of nirmama.
From the standpoint of contemplation, Nirmamā indicates that Parāśakti cannot finally be understood merely as the owner of one portion of the universe. She is the consciousness immanent in all existence; therefore the ordinary duality between an owner and an owned object cannot be ultimate in relation to Her. This is why Bhāskararāya grounds Her freedom from possessiveness in the absence of difference.
An important distinction should also be retained. Freedom from possessiveness does not mean rejection of responsibility, love or relationship. Mamatā becomes binding when relationship is enclosed by an appropriating claim such as “for me,” “under my control,” or “it cannot be without me.” The name points beyond this possessive claim, not toward absence of compassion or relationship.
For the sādhaka, Nirmamāyai namaḥ can become a subtle form of self-examination. One may observe where the tendency to call family, body, knowledge, wealth, position or even spiritual practice “mine” passes beyond care and responsibility into a claim of ownership. The essential movement is not necessarily to abandon things, but to loosen the tendency to use them to reinforce the limited “I.”
Parāmbā may be remembered with the understanding that what has been received is not proof of absolute ownership, but something accepted as grace and held with responsibility. Relationships remain, yet the grip upon them lessens; duty remains, while the pride of possession gradually becomes lighter.
Nirmamā is Parāmbā in whom the cognition “this is mine” has no place, because ultimately no separate reality stands apart from Her. Bhāskararāya explains the name through the absence of possessive cognition, which depends upon difference. For the sādhaka, its remembrance calls not for abandonment of things and relationships, but for recognising the pride of ownership within them and offering that claim at the feet of the Goddess.
