Nirvikārā occurs in the sequence of names that describes Śrī Lalitāmbikā as the Supreme Reality beyond the changing manifestations of the world. The preceding name Nityamuktā expresses Her eternal freedom; Nirvikārā establishes a distinct point: no modification or transformation takes place in Her own essential nature.

Nirvikārā = nir + vikārā. The word vikāra denotes modification, transformation, or a change from one condition into another. The prefix nir here indicates absence. Thus the direct meaning of the feminine form Nirvikārā is: She in whom there is no modification; She who remains changeless in Her essential nature.

Changelessness here does not mean inert inactivity. The Sahasranāma itself presents the Goddess as the ground of creation, preservation, dissolution, and innumerable powers. Nirvikārā refers to the Supreme Reality that underlies all these manifestations without itself becoming subject to their transformations.

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin interprets this name specifically against the background of the twenty-three evolutes beginning with Mahat that are recognised in Sāṅkhya. His point is therefore more precise than the general statement that the Goddess does not change. He places Her beyond the entire chain of transformation through which manifest existence is explained in terms of Mahat, ahaṅkāra, the faculties, subtle elements, and gross elements. In this reading, Nirvikārā establishes the Goddess not as one evolving principle among these, but as the Supreme Ground beyond such modification.

To clarify this point, Bhāskararāya invokes the well-known Sāṅkhya classification of principles. In that scheme, primordial Prakṛti is not itself an effect; the seven beginning with Mahat function as both causes and effects; the following sixteen are effects; and Puruṣa is neither cause nor effect:

Meaning: Primordial Prakṛti is not itself an effect of another principle. The seven beginning with Mahat function both as causes and effects; the following sixteen are effects alone, while Puruṣa is neither Prakṛti nor an effect. Bhāskararāya uses this familiar Sāṅkhya classification to indicate that Śrī Lalitāmbikā is beyond the twenty-three evolving principles beginning with Mahat.

Therefore, restricting vikāra here merely to emotional fluctuation, mental disturbance, or moral defect would narrow Bhāskararāya's interpretation. His explanation concerns ontological transformation. Mind, ego, the faculties, and the subtle and gross world belong to the domain of change, whereas the supreme nature of Parāmbā does not belong to that chain of evolving principles.

From the contemplative standpoint of Śrīvidyā, Nirvikārā preserves an important distinction: change is evident in the manifested world, but the occurrence of change does not require the Supreme Reality itself to undergo transformation. Through the powers of Śrī Lalitāmbikā, names and forms appear, endure, and dissolve, while Her supreme nature does not turn into something else and thereby lose its own identity. Thus worship of Her manifest form and affirmation of Her changeless supreme nature need not be regarded as contradictory.

The remembrance of Nirvikārāyai Namaḥ does not ask the sādhaka to escape from the changes of worldly life. Body, circumstances, relationships, pleasure and pain, and mental states continually change and must be dealt with appropriately. Worship through this name turns remembrance toward the Supreme Ground that is not itself subject to such change. The prayer is that amid changing circumstances, remembrance of Parāmbā's changeless nature may remain steady.

Nirvikārā directly means Parāmbā who is changeless. Bhāskararāya gives this meaning greater precision through the Sāṅkhya background of the twenty-three evolutes beginning with Mahat: the Goddess does not belong to that chain of transformation but is the Supreme Ground beyond it. Meditation on this name is the remembrance of Her unchanging supreme nature amid the changing world.
