The preceding names describe Śrī Lalitāmbikā as beyond the guṇas, without parts, free from desire and untouched by destruction. Nityamuktā now relates that absolute nature specifically to the question of bondage. Liberation is not a condition that the Goddess attains at some point in time. Her very nature is one that has never come under bondage.

Nityamuktā = nitya + muktā. Nitya means always, at all times, or that whose nature is not invalidated by temporal change. Muktā, derived from the root muc, here in the feminine form, conveys freedom from bondage. The direct meaning is therefore: She who is eternally free is Nityamuktā. In the arcanā form Nityamuktāyai namaḥ, salutations are offered to that Goddess in the dative case.

The word nitya is especially significant here. If real bondage existed first and were removed later, liberation would be an acquired condition. By calling the Goddess Nityamuktā, however, the sequence of bondage followed by release does not apply to Her. Her freedom is not an attained result but an intrinsic characteristic of Her nature.

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin unfolds this name through several possible derivations. One distinctive reading is “nityaṃ muktā yasyā bhaktāḥ sā”: She whose devotees are eternally liberated is Nityamuktā. He also accepts the sense that the Goddess Herself is always free and finally brings the explanation to “mokṣarūpety arthaḥ”, meaning that She is of the very nature of liberation.

Meaning: She whose devotees are eternally liberated, or She who Herself is always free; ultimately the name presents the Goddess as the very nature of liberation.

The devotee-centred derivation should be understood carefully. It does not establish a mechanical rule by which bondage disappears merely through an external religious identity. Bhāskararāya's explanation first establishes the Goddess as inherently free and then relates the devotee's liberation to that Supreme Reality. Thus Nityamuktā leaves no external distance between the object of worship and liberation itself: the Supreme Śakti who is worshipped is Herself of the nature of mokṣa.

The philosophical weight of Nityamuktā lies in the question of what liberation actually means. If mokṣa were a place, an object or a condition produced at a particular time, its very production could make it impermanent. The freedom of Parāmbā expressed by this name is not such an acquisition. She signifies that nature of consciousness to which bondage cannot belong intrinsically. At the level of the seeker, bondage may be experienced as serious and compelling, but bondage is not attributed to the Goddess in Her ultimate nature.

The Jñānakhaṇḍa of the Tripurārahasya provides a useful thematic parallel to Nityamuktā through its discussion of bondage and liberation. It states that, with respect to the conscious Self, no real bondage has existed from beginningless time, and the seeker is asked to examine the delusion arising from identification with the insentient. This verse is not a commentary on the Sahasranāma name Nityamuktā, but it clarifies how, within a Śākta non-dual perspective, liberation can be understood less as acquiring a new reality and more as the removal of error concerning bondage.

Meaning: O Rāma, in truth no one has been bound from beginningless time. Abandon the delusion of identifying the insentient with the Self and inquire into what this bondage actually is.

From the standpoint of contemplation, Nityamuktā invites the seeker to view carefully the relationship between Parāmbā and the manifested world. The Supreme Śakti presides over the world, yet its changes, karmic bondage and limitations do not bind Her independent nature. Just as light illumines objects without becoming limited to their forms, this name allows the Goddess to be remembered both as the consciousness present within all and as eternally free from limitation.

For this reason, restricting the name merely to a reward obtained after death would narrow its meaning. Nityamuktā is first a name of the Goddess's own nature. The seeker's liberation becomes relevant afterwards: recognition, remembrance and worship of Her eternally free nature foster discernment that changing limitations do not constitute the ultimate definition of the Self. No initiation-specific secret or ritual procedure is required to state this direct philosophical implication of the name.

While remembering Nityamuktāyai namaḥ, the seeker may pray to the Goddess for the discernment to distinguish between what is truly binding and what is superimposed as bondage. Duties, relationships and the circumstances of life retain their proper place; spiritual practice does not require escape from them. The prayer is that limitations produced by ego, attachment and identification with the body should not be mistaken for ultimate truth, and that the mind may turn towards the consciousness that is eternal, pure and free in Parāmbā.

Nityamuktā is Parāmbā whose freedom is neither produced by a discipline nor acquired at a particular time. Bhāskararāya presents Her as eternally free, as related to the liberation of Her devotees, and ultimately as mokṣarūpā, the very nature of liberation. Thus liberation is not an attainment separate from the Goddess: the Supreme Lady in whom the seeker takes refuge is Herself eternal freedom.
