The preceding names describe the Goddess as stainless, eternal, beyond form and guṇas, partless and tranquil. Within the same philosophical sequence, Niṣkāmā declares that Parāmbā has no craving for anything yet unattained. This absence of desire is not the result of suppression, indifference or incapacity; it belongs to Her intrinsic completeness.
Niṣkāmā = niḥ + kāmā. Here kāma means desire, longing, or the wish to obtain something, while niḥ conveys absence. The direct meaning is therefore: She in whom desire is absent is Niṣkāmā.
The name should not be read merely through the ordinary desires of an individual being. A person commonly desires an experience, object, condition or pleasure regarded as something not yet possessed. In the case of the Goddess, the name indicates the absence of any such deficiency from which self-directed craving could arise.
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin directly explains the name as “nirgataḥ kāma icchā yasyāḥ sā niṣkāmā”: She from whom kāma, or desire, is absent is Niṣkāmā. He then cites a particularly apt statement from the Devībhāgavata, showing that this absence of desire is to be understood through the Goddess's completeness.
This interpretation establishes an important distinction. Desirelessness does not mean forcibly suppressing desire. In suppression, desire remains present while its expression is restrained. The Goddess's desirelessness is different: there is no underlying craving awaiting fulfilment through something external to Her.
Niṣkāmā should also not be taken to mean that the Goddess is purposeless or inactive. The Lalitā Sahasranāma itself praises Her through many active forms connected with creation, preservation, dissolution, grace and the welfare of devotees. The negation here therefore concerns desire born of personal lack, not the sovereign will of the Goddess or Her grace towards the universe.
For the same reason, She may be free from desire and yet be described elsewhere as fulfilling the desires of devotees. One need not personally lack something in order to give. Her power to bestow does not arise from a need of Her own, but flows from Her fullness and sovereignty. Niṣkāmā therefore does not contradict earlier descriptions of the Goddess as a fulfiller of desires.
From the contemplative perspective of Śrīvidyā, Niṣkāmā points to Parāmbā's completeness and fulfilment in Herself. Desire ordinarily implies a distance between the desiring subject and the desired object: “this is not yet mine.” In relation to the Goddess as the Supreme Reality, such an ultimately separate reality cannot stand. Her desirelessness is therefore the language of fullness, not emptiness.
For the sādhaka, remembrance of Niṣkāmā is not a command to reject every desire. Necessary concerns relating to food, family, duty, health, learning and ordinary life are natural parts of embodied existence. The spiritual question is whether the mind has made some object an indispensable condition for its happiness and sense of completeness.
While contemplating the Goddess as Niṣkāmā, the sādhaka may pray that desire, when it arises, remain aligned with dharma; that effort remain free from possessive attachment; and that whether a result is obtained or not, inner peace not be made hostage to external achievement. The practical direction of the name therefore lies less in displaying renunciation and more in inward non-attachment and reliance upon the Divine.
Niṣkāmā is Parāmbā in whom craving does not arise because nothing remains to be acquired for Her own fulfilment. Bhāskararāya connects the name with the Goddess's completeness. For the sādhaka, its remembrance invites recognition of the inner insistence that says, “without this particular attainment I cannot be complete,” even before any question of outward renunciation arises.
