The preceding names progressively describe Śrī Lalitāmbikā as beyond dependence, impurity, attributes, form, desire, change and the limitations of manifestation. Niṣkāraṇā now carries that teaching into the domain of causality. Ordinarily, whatever comes into being depends upon a cause; Parāmbā is not a produced link within such a chain of causes.

Niḥ + kāraṇā = Niṣkāraṇā. Here niḥ conveys absence, while kāraṇa means a cause from which an effect arises. The direct meaning of the feminine form Niṣkāraṇā is: She who has no cause, that is, She is not produced from any prior reality.

This should not be understood to mean that the Goddess performs no action. Here kāraṇa concerns the cause of Her own origination, not a motive or reason for performing an act. The name states that Parāmbā Herself is not a produced effect.

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin gives a brief but decisive explanation: “sarvakāraṇasya kāraṇāntarābhāvān niṣkāraṇā”. The point is that what is itself the cause of all does not require another cause prior to it. Thus Niṣkāraṇā signifies not merely one “without a cause,” but the supreme reality upon which the succession of causes ultimately depends while remaining dependent on no other cause.

Bhāskararāya supports this interpretation by invoking Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad 6.9. This passage is particularly apt for the present name because the same mantra describes the Supreme as the cause while denying any progenitor or superior cause over it.

It is the cause and the Lord even of the lords of the faculties; it has no progenitor and no superior ruler over it.

The Upaniṣadic statement clarifies two aspects simultaneously. The Supreme is a cause because the existence of the world ultimately depends upon it, yet it is causeless because no other principle produces its own existence. Thus “the cause” and “Niṣkāraṇā” are not contradictory descriptions.

Within ordinary experience, asking for a cause leads from an effect to something prior: clay for a pot, threads for cloth, and a seed for a sprout. Niṣkāraṇā prevents this procedure from being extended indefinitely to Parāmbā. If the ultimate cause were itself produced by another cause, it would cease to be ultimate and the question would simply move further backwards. The name therefore indicates the Goddess as beginningless and self-established.

For the same reason, calling Her merely the “first cause” can be inadequate if “first” is understood as merely the earliest moment in time. Śrī Lalitāmbikā is not an extremely ancient produced entity. The intended meaning is a reality whose existence does not depend upon a prior productive cause and upon whose basis the entire order of cause and effect becomes possible.

From the standpoint of contemplation, Niṣkāraṇā reminds the sādhaka of a fundamental distinction between the Goddess and the objects of the manifest world. Perceptible things depend upon conditions, materials and preceding causes; Parāmbā cannot be placed within that class of dependent entities. In Śrīvidyā contemplation, She is approached as the self-established supreme consciousness through which existence, knowledge and the experience of the world become possible.

This philosophical indication does not require the disclosure of any esoteric ritual procedure. The name itself is sufficient to remind the worshipper that the Goddess does not need to be established through some limited prior cause; the whole manifested order, including causality, is understood as dependent upon Her.

While uttering Niṣkāraṇāyai namaḥ, the sādhaka bows to Parāmbā whose existence requires no external foundation. This remembrance can turn devotion away from an endless search through dependent causes toward the fundamental reality upon which the worshipper, knowledge and the whole field of experience depend. The prayerful disposition may be: “O Mother, amid changing causes and circumstances, guide my mind towards steadiness in Your independent truth.”

Niṣkāraṇā is Śrī Lalitāmbikā whose existence has no prior productive cause. According to Bhāskararāya, because She is the cause of all, She depends upon no further cause; the Upaniṣadic declaration that She has no progenitor illuminates the same principle. The name recalls Parāmbā not as a member of the dependent chain of cause and effect, but as its ultimate ground.
