Śāntā occurs in a sequence in which the Sahasranāma describes aspects of the Goddess that transcend the limitations of changing nature. Coming immediately after Nirguṇā and Niṣkalā, the name does not describe a temporary condition of mental rest. Here tranquillity belongs to the very nature of Parāmbā, a state in which there is no inner deficiency or incompleteness from which disturbance could arise.
Śāntā is an independent adjectival name. The Sanskrit root √śam carries the sense of subsiding, pacification, tranquillity and the cessation of disturbance. Śāntā is the feminine form of śānta. Its direct meaning is therefore: She who is completely tranquil, in whose essential nature agitation is absent, is Śāntā.
It would therefore be too narrow to take Śāntā merely as a reference to a gentle facial expression or mild behaviour. External serenity may express tranquillity, but the name concerns something more fundamental: the very nature of the Goddess is not subject to disturbance.
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin gives the principal explanation very succinctly as “śāntā śamavatī”: She possesses śama; She is of the nature of perfect tranquillity. The significance becomes clearer from the context. Immediately before this, he explains the Goddess as Nirguṇā and Niṣkalā. Thus the peace indicated here is not primarily an acquired mental condition but points to the Supreme Reality that is not limited by qualities, division or change.
In his explanation, Bhāskararāya invokes the Śruti expression “niṣkalaṃ niṣkriyaṃ śāntam”. The same words occur in Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad 6.19. The parallel is especially pertinent because Niṣkalā and Śāntā likewise occur together in the present sequence of the Sahasranāma.
This Śruti context clarifies an important distinction in the name Śāntā. Ordinary peace is experienced after some disturbance has subsided and therefore depends upon a preceding agitation. The word śānta, when applied to the Supreme Reality, has a deeper force. Peace there is not the result obtained after conflict; it indicates a nature untouched by disturbance itself.
From the standpoint of contemplation, Śāntā does not require a contradiction between the personal and transcendent descriptions of the Goddess. Śrī Lalitāmbikā is worshipped with form, weapons, beauty and maternal presence, while names such as Nirguṇā, Niṣkalā and Śāntā describe the same Supreme Śakti at the level of ultimate reality. The worshipful form provides a support for contemplation, while Śāntā points toward the underlying Reality whose being is not disturbed by mental or material change.
For the sādhaka, remembrance through Śāntāyai namaḥ does not mean becoming passive toward every circumstance of life. Its more measured implication is that, amid the continual changes of circumstance, desire, fear, success and failure, worship may repeatedly return the mind toward the consciousness that witnesses them all. To remember the Goddess as Śāntā is to incline the inner being toward that steadiness.
Śāntā is Parāmbā whose very nature is endowed with śama and untouched by agitation. Bhāskararāya's “śāntā śamavatī” gives the direct centre of the name, while the Śruti expression “niṣkalaṃ niṣkriyaṃ śāntam” relates it to the indivisible and changeless tranquillity of the Supreme Reality. The peace of this name is therefore not a pause produced by circumstances, but tranquillity inherent in Her very nature.
