The preceding name, Śāntimatī, described the Goddess as embodiment of peace. Nirādhārā now carries the description toward Her supreme ontological nature. The question is not merely whether the Goddess has some support, but how She who is Herself the ground of the entire universe could require another foundation apart from Herself.

Nirādhārā = nir + ādhārā. Ādhāra means a foundation, substratum or support upon which something rests or depends. With nir, the immediate sense is: She who has no other support, that is, She who does not depend upon any external or superior reality. The form used in worship is Nirādhārāyai namaḥ.

This meaning should not be understood as “unsupported” in the sense of deficiency or instability. For an ordinary object, absence of support may imply weakness; for the Supreme Reality, however, requiring another foundation would itself imply dependence. In Nirādhārā, what is denied is dependence, not fullness or stability.

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin unfolds several related senses of the name. In one interpretation, She is understood as having emerged from an ādhāra, particularly as risen beyond the Mūlādhāra. Here nir conveys the sense of going forth from or beyond. The emphasis is therefore on the Goddess transcending confinement to any single locus.

His more fundamental philosophical sense is that She has no other substratum. The reason is that the Goddess Herself is the substratum of the entire universe. If an independent foundation beneath Her were admitted, that foundation would become the ultimate reality instead. Thus the universe rests upon Her, while She rests upon no reality other than Herself. Consequently, Nirādhārā and a later name such as Sarvādhārā, “the support of all,” are not contradictory. Supporting everything while depending upon nothing else are two aspects of the same supreme independence.

Bhāskararāya gives a third, distinctly Śrīvidyā-oriented sense: the Goddess is the very object and reality of nirādhāra-pūjā. To explain this, he cites a passage from the Sūta Saṃhitā distinguishing supported and support-free modes of inward worship. Its decisive statement is:

Meaning: Worship that proceeds through a support is sādhārā; nirādhārā worship is established in saṃvit, consciousness itself.

Here “without support” does not mean the absence of worship. Rather, instead of treating a form, object or external locus distinct from consciousness as the ultimate reality, worship culminates in saṃvit itself. In the continuation cited by Bhāskararāya, the Supreme Śakti is identified with consciousness. In this sense, Nirādhārā points toward the level at which the worshipped Goddess and consciousness are not regarded as two unrelated realities. This is a doctrinal explanation, not an instruction in any initiation-dependent internal ritual.

The Gāyatrī Sahasranāma in the Devī Bhāgavata also applies the epithet Nirādhārā to the Goddess, placing it beside names such as Nityā, Nirmalā, Nirguṇā, Nityaśuddhā and Nirañjanā. This does not independently explain the present Lalitā Sahasranāma name, but it provides a close thematic witness within the Śākta tradition to Nirādhārā as an epithet of the Goddess in Her transcendent nature.

Meaning: She is dear to Nārāyaṇa, eternal, stainless, beyond the guṇas and the supreme treasure; She is without dependence, incomparable, eternally pure and untouched by stain.

From the standpoint of contemplation, the name reveals a subtle order. Every known object in the world depends upon some cause, place, relation or condition. To call Parāmbā Nirādhārā is not to add one more object to that chain of causes; it points to the ultimate ground beyond which the question “Upon what does this rest?” no longer properly arises. Her being without another support is therefore not emptiness, but supreme independence.

For the devotee, remembrance of Nirādhārā does not mean abandoning worldly responsibilities or legitimate human supports. Its contemplative value is to cease treating changing things as the final source of security and to turn the heart toward the Goddess who does not Herself depend upon anything changeable. The prayer may simply be: “O Nirādhārā, let me understand the limits of the supports on which I rely, and steady my heart in remembrance of Your unchanging reality.”

Nirādhārā is She who requires no other substratum because She is Herself the ultimate ground of all. Bhāskararāya extends this direct meaning to transcendence of the Mūlādhāra and to the subtle sense of nirādhāra worship established in consciousness itself. The name therefore signifies not absence, but the Goddess's incomparable independence and self-established reality.
