The preceding name Nirādhārā indicated Śrī Lalitāmbikā as the independent Reality that rests upon no other support. Nirañjanā reveals a different aspect of that transcendent nature: Her consciousness is never truly stained by māyā, ignorance, or the obscuration arising from them. The name concerns not external cleanliness, but the untouched nature of Supreme Consciousness.

Nirañjanā = nir + añjana + ā. The primary meaning of añjana is collyrium or a dark pigment applied to the eyes, from which arise the extended senses of blackening, coating, or stain. The prefix nir expresses absence or freedom from something. Thus the direct feminine sense of Nirañjanā is: She in whom there is no darkening or defiling stain. Its dative singular form used in worship is Nirañjanāyai namaḥ.

The direct sense is therefore more precise than simply calling the Goddess “pure.” Its verbal image is that of complete freedom from anything that could darken, coat, or obscure the nature of what is intrinsically present.

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin does not restrict añjana to physical collyrium. He explains it as darkness, specifically in the sense of association with māyā. His derivation therefore presents Nirañjanā as She from whom such darkening stain is wholly absent.

In Bhāskararāya's explanation, this association with māyā has an obscuring function. Through māyā, the undivided ground appears as differentiated objects and limited agents. Calling Parāmbā Nirañjanā means that this differentiating darkness does not touch Her own nature. She is the consciousness upon which even the experience of obscuration depends, while the obscuration itself cannot truly stain its substratum.

Bhāskararāya supports this sense by invoking Śruti. In the Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad, the word nirañjanam occurs in a description of the Supreme Reality in precisely this sense of stainless and untouched being:

Meaning: The Supreme Reality is without parts, free from action, tranquil, faultless and stainless; it is the supreme bridge to immortality, compared to a fire whose fuel has been consumed.

This Upaniṣadic mantra does not independently comment upon the Sahasranāma name. Its relevance is that Vedic usage itself employs nirañjana for the Supreme Reality as faultless, unobscured and beyond stain. Bhāskararāya's interpretation of añjana as māyic darkness therefore belongs to an established Vedāntic usage rather than to a modern metaphor.

A necessary distinction is helpful here. A physical pigment applied to an object may genuinely alter its appearance, but the scriptural understanding of māyic ignorance does not make the Supreme Consciousness itself undergo a real modification. Obscuration, differentiation and bondage may be compelling at the level of experience, yet their substratum does not itself become stained by them. Nirañjanā points to this untouched ground.

For this reason, it would be incomplete to reduce Nirañjanā merely to moral faultlessness. Moral purity is compatible with the name, but Bhāskararāya's emphasis is more metaphysical: the Goddess is wholly untouched by the māyic darkness that obscures Reality in limited individual experience.

From the contemplative standpoint of Śrīvidyā, Nirañjanā may be remembered as the foundational Consciousness that illumines every experience without becoming limited by the conditions of experience. Pleasure and pain, clarity and confusion, favourable and adverse circumstances arise and subside in mind and life, while the fundamental light by which they are known does not lose its nature by taking on their colour. This is a contemplative implication, not a psychological replacement for Bhāskararāya's direct interpretation.

Remembrance of Nirañjanāyai namaḥ need not become an excuse to deny one's imperfections. Rather, it can inspire the sādhaka to recognise them without making them the final definition of the self. Attachment, aversion, confusion and ego remain matters for purification in practice, while this name of Parāmbā keeps the direction of sādhana fixed upon the Consciousness beyond such coverings. The fitting prayer is for discernment to recognise inner stain and for steadiness in remembering Her untouched nature.

Nirañjanā is She in whom there is no darkening stain. Bhāskararāya identifies this darkness specifically with association with māyā. Name 133 therefore reveals Śrī Lalitāmbikā as the Supreme Consciousness in whose light the obscuring power of differentiation itself appears, yet which that obscuration can never stain.
