In this portion of the Sahasranāma, the description of the Goddess moves progressively towards Her subtler metaphysical nature. Following Nityā, the name Nirākārā declares that the supreme nature of Śrī Lalitāmbikā is not confined to any fixed visible shape, arrangement of parts, or limited conditioned manifestation. This does not deny Her sacred worshipful form; it concerns the infinitude of the transcendent Reality from which all forms become manifest.

Nirākārā = nir + ākāra + ā. Here nir conveys absence or freedom from something, while ākāra means form, shape, or a configuration by which something is apprehended as bounded. The feminine form Nirākārā therefore means directly: She whose supreme nature is not limited by any determinate form. The archana form Nirākārāyai namaḥ offers reverence to the Goddess who transcends the limitation of form.

One qualification is essential to this direct meaning. “Formless” does not mean nonexistent, void, or incapable of manifestation. The Sahasranāma itself describes Lalitā's face, eyes, hair, ornaments, weapons, throne, and divine beauty in rich detail. The negation here is therefore not of manifested form, but of the claim that any form can circumscribe Her supreme nature.

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin connects ākāra with conditioned or qualified form and states: “ākārasya saguṇarūpasya kalpitatvān nirākārā”, meaning that She is Nirākārā because determinate qualified form is a superimposed limitation. A form defined through name, qualities, and distinctions therefore cannot constitute the final boundary of the Supreme Goddess. Her manifested form is true and meaningful within worship, vision, and devotion, yet the reality of Parāmbā is not exhausted by that manifestation.

To clarify this point, Bhāskararāya cites a verse from Gajendra's prayer in the Śrīmad Bhāgavata. The Supreme Reality is described there as incapable of being exhausted by categories such as deity, asura, human, animal, woman, man, or any other limited classification. The purpose of the citation is not to reject a particular sacred form of the Goddess, but to show that the Supreme cannot be contained completely within any single conceptual category.

Meaning: The Supreme Reality is not merely deity, asura, human, or animal; nor is it exhausted by the classifications of woman, neuter, man, or any finite creature. It cannot be completely defined as a quality, an action, the manifest, or the unmanifest. The verse praises the limitless Reality that remains beyond all such limiting determinations.

A natural question arises in the worship of Śrī Lalitā: how can the Goddess who is contemplated with an aruṇa form, three eyes, crown, pāśa, aṅkuśa, sugarcane bow, and flower arrows also be called Nirākārā? The answer lies in recognising different levels of reference. The worshipful form is Her gracious and accessible manifestation for the devotee; Nirākārā names the Reality of the Goddess that is not confined to any single manifestation.

Thus the formed and the formless need not be treated as two competing deities or two unrelated truths. Form may be a manifestation of the formless Reality, while formlessness indicates that the Reality retains its fullness beyond any particular manifestation. Just as the shape of a vessel does not ultimately confine space itself, a divine image does not circumscribe the metaphysical infinitude of Parāmbā. This is only an explanatory analogy, not a complete definition of the Goddess.

In the third Skandha of the Devī Bhāgavata, Brahmā answers Nārada's question concerning the attributeless Reality by stating a principle directly relevant here: that which is truly beyond qualities and form does not become an ordinary object of visual perception. This passage helps illuminate Nirākārā because it distinguishes visible manifestation from the supreme Reality without denying the Goddess's manifest form.

Meaning: O sage, the attributeless Reality cannot have a form that becomes an ordinary object of sight. Whatever is apprehended as a visible form belongs to the realm of change; therefore that which is formless in its supreme nature cannot be captured as a finite visible shape.

From the standpoint of worship, Nirākārā does not instruct the sādhaka to abandon form, but to recognise its limit. The form, name, and contemplation of Śrī Lalitāmbikā are genuine supports of worship; yet the worshipper remembers that the Consciousness adored through that sacred form is not confined to it. Thus image, mantra, and meditation may remain true centres of devotion while the Supreme Reality exceeds every single mental or physical configuration.

Another distinction is useful here. “Formless” should not simply be imagined as empty space, darkness, a mass of light, or some abstract mental picture, for each of these is still a configuration conceived by the mind. The metaphysical force of the name is deeper: Parāmbā precedes and transcends every boundary by which the mind might declare, “This alone is Her complete nature.”

In remembering Nirākārāyai namaḥ, the sādhaka need not abandon the beloved form of the Goddess. While bowing before that very form, one relinquishes a subtler limitation of understanding: “The Mother is only as much as I am able to see.” The sacred form brings Her near to devotion; remembrance of Nirākārā reminds the devotee that Her being immeasurably exceeds our perception, imagination, and description.

Nirākārā is Parāmbā whose supreme nature is not circumscribed by any determinate form. Her divine manifest form is real, sacred, and gracious within worship, yet that form does not constitute the boundary of Her infinite being. The name therefore does not negate sacred form; it proclaims the Goddess's form-transcending fullness.
