In this portion of the Sahasranāma, successive limitations by which an ordinary object is understood as subject to action, impurity, time, form, qualities and change are being removed from the nature of the Goddess. Following “Nirlepā” and “Nirmalā,” the name Nityā makes a fundamental statement: Śrī Lalitāmbikā does not begin to exist at a particular moment, nor does Her existence terminate at another. Here “eternal” does not merely mean enduring for an immensely long time; it signifies a reality not conditioned by origination and destruction.
Nityā is an independent word. It is the feminine nominative singular form of the adjective nitya, “eternal” or “perpetual.” In worship the dative form Nityāyai namaḥ is used, meaning, “Salutations to the Goddess who is Nityā.”
In Sanskrit, nitya principally denotes that which is not invalidated by temporal origination and destruction. The direct sense is therefore: She who always is, whose reality is not destroyed by the changes of past, present or future, and who does not arise and perish like transient phenomena, is Nityā. The name is not describing the Goddess as possessing an immensely long lifespan, since lifespan itself is measured by time. It concerns Her timeless and enduring reality.
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya connects this name philosophically with the preceding “Nirmalā.” If impurity or ignorance is regarded as ultimately unreal, the underlying reality upon which it appears cannot thereby be declared unreal. “Nityā” therefore clarifies the uninterrupted reality of that substratum. Bhāskararāya’s purport is that the Goddess is not a reality that is negated in any of the three divisions of time. Her eternality is thus distinct from a supposed existence that arises and disappears from moment to moment.
The commentary also indicates traditional Śrīvidyā senses connected with the Tithi-Nityās and Kāla-Nityās. These point to a specialized Āgamic dimension of the name without restricting its direct philosophical meaning to that technical usage. Initiation-dependent mantra or internal ritual details are neither necessary nor appropriate here. The principal point remains the one established by the commentary: while experiences and manifestations change, the reality of the Goddess who underlies them is not itself transient.
The Devī Gītā illuminates the philosophical sense of “Nityā” with particular directness. The Goddess describes Her essential nature as self-luminous consciousness and establishes its eternality. The importance of this passage is that eternality is not treated merely as a devotional epithet; it is explained in relation to the continuity of consciousness itself.
The verses draw attention to changing states such as waking, dream and deep sleep. Objects and mental modes continually vary, yet the consciousness by which their variation is known is never experienced as altogether absent. This refines the meaning of “Nityā”: eternality does not mean making one condition within time permanently fixed; it refers to the fundamental consciousness that illumines the appearance and disappearance of all such conditions.
In the third Skandha of the Śrīmad Devī Bhāgavata, Viṣṇu’s praise draws an explicit distinction between the eternality of the Goddess and that of the gods. Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Īśvara and other deities are associated with origination within the manifested order; the hymn therefore declares that the supreme Mother alone is Nityā in the fullest sense and is the primordial Prakṛti. This is an especially close Śākta parallel to the present Sahasranāma.
In addition, the Śrīmad Devī Bhāgavata directly supports this understanding of the Supreme Śakti as eternal. Describing the Goddess as the very nature of Brahman and as the Supreme Self, it speaks of contemplating Her as both Nityā and Sanātanī:
In this verse, Nityā is directly associated with the Supreme Śakti, Brahman and the Supreme Self. Eternity here therefore does not mean merely enduring for an immeasurably long period. It refers to the fundamental Reality that is not destroyed by changes occurring within time.
Recognition of change requires a relatively stable basis. The body changes through childhood, youth and old age; thoughts, memories, pleasure, pain and circumstances also change. Classical analysis does not regard this stream of alteration as the ultimate reality. The name “Nityā” points toward the reality by which change can be known and which does not perish with every observable transformation. This also explains the proximity of names such as “Nirākārā,” “Nirguṇā,” “Niṣkalā” and “Nirupaplavā.” They do not merely repeat one statement, but successively remove the limitations of form, qualities, division and destruction.
This should not be mistaken for a denial of the worshipful embodied form of the Goddess. The meditation-form, iconography, weapons and beauty of Śrī Lalitāmbikā remain entirely meaningful in worship. “Nityā” makes a statement about the supreme reality underlying that worshipful manifestation. A form may become manifest before the devotee, yet the truth of the Goddess is not confined to the beginning and duration of that particular form. Śākta tradition therefore need not treat personal worship and the contemplation of supreme consciousness as mutually opposed.
From the standpoint of worship, “Nityā” recalls an important distinction: the devotee’s experience changes, whereas the supreme reality of the One worshipped does not. Meditation may sometimes be effortless and at other times the mind may wander; devotion may feel intense on one occasion and dry on another. Such mental states need not be treated as final evidence of the Goddess being near or absent. Remembrance of Nityā turns the devotee from the instability of experiences toward the consciousness that scripture identifies with the eternal nature of the Goddess.
Eternity should therefore not be imagined as inert immobility. The Devī Gītā relates eternality to consciousness. It is not lifeless stasis, but the self-luminous reality within which waking, dream, sleep, knowledge, memory and the experience of the world become manifest. Within the boundaries appropriate to Śrīvidyā exposition, it is sufficient to remember the Goddess not as an object produced by time, but as the supreme consciousness that illumines time and its transformations.
While saying “Nityāyai namaḥ,” the devotee may pray not to mistake changing circumstances for the final foundation of life. Body, relationships, success, failure, emotions and thoughts all belong to time. Even while responding responsibly to them, the heart need not forget the eternal refuge that is not destroyed by their arrival and departure. Such remembrance is not withdrawal from life; it is a discerning devotion that sees the transient as transient and the eternal as eternal.
Nityā is Śrī Lalitāmbikā whose reality is not limited by origination, change or destruction. Bhāskararāya clarifies Her eternality as an abiding reality not negated in the three divisions of time; the Devī Gītā relates it to self-luminous consciousness; and the Devī Bhāgavata distinguishes the Mother as truly eternal from deities who participate in origination. Thus “Nityāyai namaḥ” is not a salutation to an immensely long existence within time, but to the supreme Goddess in whose light time and change themselves are experienced.
