With Nirlepā, the Sahasranāma turns to a mode of description in which the Goddess is shown as untouched by the world, karma, and limiting adjuncts. The subject is not merely physical purity. The name declares that Śrī Lalitāmbikā is wholly unattached to karma and to the bondage arising from it.
Nirlepā = nir + lepa + ā. The word lepa denotes adhesion, contact, or something clinging to another so as to leave its effect upon it. The prefix nir negates such adhesion. Nirlepā is the feminine nominative singular form, while the form used in worship is the dative singular, Nirlepāyai namaḥ.
The direct meaning is therefore: She upon whom no stain or adhesion can cling is Nirlepā. In the context of the Sahasranāma commentary, this lepa is especially the relation with karma. Although action belongs to the manifested order, no binding mark of karma can attach itself to the Supreme Consciousness.
सौभाग्यभास्कर में भास्करराय मखिन् लेप को स्पष्टतः कर्मसम्बन्ध से जोड़ते हैं। उनके विवेचन का आशय है कि भगवती उस कर्मसम्बन्ध से रहित हैं जिसके कारण जीव कर्मफल और बन्धन का भोक्ता बनता है। वे एक वैकल्पिक दृष्टि भी देते हैं कि ज्ञान के द्वारा जिसका कर्मसम्बन्ध निवृत्त हो गया है, उसे भी निर्लेप कहा जाता है। इस प्रकार नाम परमात्मस्वरूप की स्वाभाविक असंगता की ओर संकेत करता है और साथ ही ज्ञान से प्राप्त कर्मासंगता का बोध भी कराता है। :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin explicitly relates lepa to connection with karma. His explanation indicates that the Goddess is free from that karmic relation through which an individual becomes the experiencer of karmic results and bondage. He also gives an alternate perspective: one whose relation with karma has departed through knowledge may likewise be called nirlepa. The name therefore points both to the natural non-attachment of the Supreme and to the freedom from karmic adhesion that knowledge brings.
भास्करराय इसी अर्थ को स्पष्ट करने के लिए भगवद्गीता के प्रसिद्ध कमलपत्र-दृष्टान्त का स्मरण कराते हैं। गीता में कर्मयोगी के विषय में कहा गया है कि आसक्ति छोड़कर ब्रह्म में कर्म समर्पित करने वाला मनुष्य पाप से उसी प्रकार लिप्त नहीं होता जैसे जल से कमलपत्र। यह दृष्टान्त निर्लेपा के अर्थ को अत्यन्त सूक्ष्मता से स्पष्ट करता है: किसी वस्तु की उपस्थिति और उससे बन्धनकारी संसर्ग एक ही बात नहीं हैं। :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
Bhāskararāya recalls the celebrated lotus-leaf image of the Bhagavad Gītā to illuminate this meaning. The Gītā says that one who performs action after dedicating it to Brahman and abandoning attachment remains unstained by sin, just as a lotus leaf remains unstained by water. The image clarifies Nirlepā with precision: the presence of something and binding adhesion to it are not the same.
It would be inaccurate to merge Nirlepā completely with the following name Nirmalā. Nirlepā emphasizes that nothing adheres to Her, especially the relation with karma, whereas Nirmalā moves toward the absence of impurity or mala. The two names stand next to each other, but their philosophical emphasis differs. Rendering Nirlepā merely as “pure” therefore loses its distinctive force.
From the standpoint of contemplation, this name recalls an important distinction. Śrī Lalitāmbikā is the governing Power of manifestation, yet the changes, karmic consequences, and limitations of manifestation cannot bind Her supreme nature. Just as light reveals many objects without acquiring the qualities of those objects, all experience appears in Consciousness without limiting Consciousness itself. This is an interpretive analogy for understanding the philosophical direction of the name, not a direct quotation from Bhāskararāya.
For the sādhaka, remembrance of Nirlepā does not teach withdrawal from action. The lotus-leaf image of the Gītā instead points toward acting while gradually loosening attachment. Performing one’s duties while offering attachment to results, egoic ownership, and the insistence that “this is mine” at the feet of the Goddess can orient the inner life toward the non-attachment of which Parāmbā is the perfect embodiment.
Nirlepā is She upon whom karma leaves no stain. Though present throughout manifestation as its Power, She remains wholly beyond karmic bondage. The image of the lotus leaf and water gives an immediate intuition of the name: contact may appear, yet bondage need not arise. Śrī Lalitāmbikā is the very form of that supremely unattached Consciousness.
