Nirmalā occurs in a sequence that progressively describes Śrī Lalitāmbikā as free from the limitations and impurities associated with bound individual existence. The preceding name Nirlepā expresses that action and experience do not adhere to Her; Nirmalā goes deeper by affirming the absence of mala, impurity itself.

Nirmalā = nir + malā. Here nir conveys absence or freedom from something, while mala ordinarily means dirt, impurity or defilement. In the feminine form, Nirmalā directly means: She who is free from impurity. The primary sense of the name therefore concerns not external cleanliness but the intrinsically stainless nature of the Goddess.

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin carries the ordinary meaning into a specific Śaiva-Śākta doctrinal sense. Here mala is not merely moral fault or mental impurity. The commentary explains Nirmalā particularly through the absence of āṇava-mala, the fundamental condition of limitation through which consciousness, though intrinsically unlimited, is experienced as a finite individual.

Meaning: She is Nirmalā because āṇava-mala is absent in Her; alternatively, the limited condition constituted by such impurity is absent in Her. Bhāskararāya also gives another perspective: if avidyā, which produces the erroneous appearance of impurity in what is eternally pure, is itself called mala, the Goddess is Nirmalā because that avidyā is absent in Her.

An important distinction is required here. In ordinary religious language, impurity may immediately suggest sin, wrong thought or improper action. Bhāskararāya's discussion concerns something more fundamental. Āṇava relates to the contracted experience in which limitation becomes dominant in place of unlimited consciousness. Nirmalatā here is therefore not an acquired virtue; in the essential nature of Parāmbā, that condition of limitation is absent altogether.

The alternative explanation in the commentary makes the point subtler. If avidyā, which causes impurity to be superimposed upon eternally pure consciousness, is itself called mala, Nirmalā denotes the substratum that is never actually defiled. Impurity may be experienced, yet the consciousness in which that experience appears does not thereby lose its inherent purity. Nirmalā is therefore more accurately understood not merely as “purified,” but as intrinsically free from impurity.

The placement of Nirlepā and Nirmalā together in the Sahasranāma is significant. Lepa is something that may adhere to a thing, whereas mala is the impurity or defilement whose presence is denied. Nirlepā therefore emphasizes that karma and related conditions do not cling to the Goddess, while Nirmalā emphasizes the absence of impurity in Her very nature. The two names are not redundant: they express the closely related but distinct ideas of non-adherence and intrinsic stainlessness.

From the standpoint of contemplation, Nirmalā directs attention away from viewing the Goddess merely as a distant moral ideal and toward contemplating Her as pure consciousness. Experiences of limitation, difference and agency remain present in the individual; the stainless nature of Parāmbā recalls the fullness of consciousness beyond those limitations. This is a philosophical indication, not an instruction in any initiation-dependent practice.

While saying Nirmalāyai namaḥ, the sādhaka may pray for the clarity to recognize personal faults without concealing them and without identifying the true Self with them. Remembrance of Nirmalā Parāmbā encourages attentiveness to inner purification while preserving the understanding that supreme purity is neither an outward display nor a ground for spiritual pride.

Nirmalā means She in whom mala is absent. Bhāskararāya relates this mala particularly to āṇava-mala and, in an alternative explanation, to avidyā that creates the appearance of impurity upon what is eternally pure. The name therefore signifies not an acquired purity but the intrinsic and unfailing stainlessness of Śrī Lalitāmbikā.
