In the preceding name Śaraccandra-nibhānanā, the radiance of Śrī Lalitāmbikā's face was compared with the pure autumn moon. The name Śātodarī now describes the natural slenderness of Her abdomen or middle. It should first be understood in this straightforward description of divine form; there is no need to replace that meaning with an obligatory esoteric symbolism.

पदच्छेद एवं प्रत्यक्ष अर्थ

शात + उदरी = शातोदरी। यहाँ शात का अर्थ कृश, तनु अथवा पतला है और उदरी उदर से सम्बन्ध रखने वाली स्त्रीवाचक अभिव्यक्ति है। अतः प्रत्यक्ष नामार्थ है: जिनका उदर अथवा मध्यभाग स्वाभाविक रूप से कृश और सुकुमार है, वे शातोदरी हैं।

Śāta + udarī = Śātodarī. Here śāta means slender, thin or attenuated, while udarī is a feminine expression relating to the abdomen. The direct meaning is therefore: She whose abdomen or middle is naturally slender and delicate is Śātodarī.

इस अर्थ में कृशता दुर्बलता का संकेत नहीं है। यह देवी के दिव्य विग्रह के अनुपात और लावण्य का वर्णन है। संस्कृत काव्य और देवता-विग्रह-वर्णन में तनु मध्यभाग सौन्दर्य की सुव्यवस्थित विशेषता के रूप में वर्णित होता है। यहाँ भी नाम का प्रधान आशय उसी रूप-माधुर्य को सूचित करना है।

In this usage, slenderness does not signify weakness. It describes the proportion and grace of the Goddess's divine form. Sanskrit poetry and descriptions of sacred forms regularly present a delicate middle as an element of harmonious beauty. That aesthetic description is the primary force of this name.

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin explains the name through the verbal sense “śo tanūkaraṇe” and glosses śātam as kṛśam, “slender.” His principal explanation is “udaraṃ yasyāḥ sā śātodarī”: She whose abdomen is slender is Śātodarī. The commentary thus gives priority to the direct description of the Goddess's form.

Bhāskararāya also gives an alternative word-play. Taking Himavān, with his innumerable caves, as śatodara, he allows the name to suggest his daughter, Haimavatī. This is an alternative interpretation rather than the principal derivation. It connects the name with the Goddess as Pārvatī, the daughter of Himavān.

Verse 79 of the Saundaryalaharī offers a particularly close thematic parallel to this description. There the Goddess's middle is called nisargakṣīṇa, naturally very slender. The verse is therefore not a grammatical proof of the Sahasranāma name, but an independent and highly relevant poetic parallel describing the same aspect of Her divine beauty. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

Meaning: O Daughter of the Mountain, ornament of womankind, Your middle is naturally exceedingly slender and appears gently bent beneath the weight of the upper form. With affectionate poetic hyperbole, the poet compares it to a tree standing upon a breaking riverbank and prays that this delicate middle may ever remain well.

The word nisargakṣīṇa is especially significant here. The slenderness is not attributed to austerity, deprivation or diminished health; it belongs naturally to the Goddess's form. This closely complements the direct sense of Śātodarī. For this name, such a straightforward parallel of sacred beauty is more appropriate than a remote philosophical interpretation.

Many names of Śrī Lalitāmbikā expound Her spiritual nature, yet the Sahasranāma also honours the beauty of Her manifest form. Descriptions of the face, eyes, hair, breast, middle and feet give the devotee a clear sacred form for contemplation. Śātodarī belongs to this tradition of embodied meditation: Her middle is exceedingly delicate while remaining in perfect harmony with the whole divine form.

इसीलिए इस नाम को आधुनिक देह-सौन्दर्य के मानकों, कृत्रिम क्षीणता या शरीर के किसी लौकिक आदर्श से जोड़ना उचित नहीं होगा। स्तोत्र का विषय पराम्बा का अलौकिक सौष्ठव है। भक्त के लिए इसका प्रयोजन शरीर-मूल्यांकन नहीं, भगवती के ध्यानयोग्य स्वरूप का रसास्वादन है।

The name should therefore not be converted into a modern standard of bodily beauty, artificial thinness or a worldly ideal of physique. The hymn is describing the transcendent grace of Parāmbā. For the devotee, its purpose is not bodily evaluation but contemplative appreciation of the Goddess's sacred form.

While reciting Śātodaryai namaḥ, the devotee may remember that delicate and perfectly proportioned form of Parāmbā which the hymn has preserved in a single name. Such form-describing names can assist concentration by establishing the sacred image of the Goddess within the mind. The contemplative focus is not comparison with one's own body, but loving attention to Her divine form.

Śātodarī primarily means the Goddess whose abdomen or middle is naturally slender and delicate. Bhāskararāya explains this through the verbal sense of attenuation and the gloss kṛśa, while also offering an alternative allusion to Haimavatī, the daughter of Himavān. The nisargakṣīṇa, naturally slender middle praised in the Saundaryalaharī provides a particularly close poetic parallel to the same beauty of Her form.
