The preceding names describe Parāmbā as free from rāga and as the one who crushes rāga. The name Nirmadā now reveals Her nature in relation to another defect of the inner being, mada. The primary statement here is not about the mental state of the sādhaka, but about Śrī Lalitāmbikā Herself: mada is entirely absent in Her.

Nirmadā = nir + madā. Here nir indicates absence, while mada denotes pride, conceit, or the intoxication of self-importance arising from one's accomplishments, power, status, beauty, learning, or possessions. Thus the direct meaning of the feminine form Nirmadā is: She in whom mada is absent; She who is entirely free from pride and conceit.

In Sanskrit, mada is not merely a synonym for happiness or healthy confidence. Among its principal senses is an intoxicated pride in which some distinction becomes the basis of an inflated sense of self-importance. Therefore, Nirmadā does not imply that the Goddess lacks power or glory. Though possessed of limitless sovereignty and splendour, She is untouched by the distortion of pride arising from them.

Meaning: She is Nirmadā because She is devoid of mada, pride or conceited intoxication.

In the Saubhāgyabhāskara, Bhāskararāya Makhin gives an exceptionally concise and direct explanation of this name. No secondary narrative or elaborate symbolism is required here. The name centres upon the Goddess's intrinsic freedom from mada. This brevity is significant because it leaves no need to replace the direct meaning with an unnecessary psychological or metaphorical construction.

Śrī Lalitāmbikā does not represent humility born of a lack of greatness; Hers is sovereignty without pride in the midst of complete divine splendour. The Sahasranāma establishes Her as Śrīmātā, Śrīmahārājñī and Cidagnikuṇḍasambhūtā, and nothing diminishes Her royal supremacy. Nirmadā shows that true greatness and mada are not identical. Glory may belong to the very nature of the Goddess, but self-conceit arising from that glory does not.

Mada presupposes treating some possession or excellence as the basis of one's separate greatness. Such a limited self-conception does not apply to Parāmbā. She from whom power, beauty, knowledge and sovereignty themselves shine forth has no need to establish superiority over another through those qualities. Her freedom from pride may therefore be understood not as deficiency, but as the natural condition of fullness.

The name Nirahaṅkārā occurs shortly afterwards in the same sequence, so mada and ahaṅkāra should not simply be treated as identical. Ahaṅkāra fundamentally concerns the assertion or superimposition of “I,” whereas mada can specifically take the form of intoxicated pride arising from power, ability, rank, learning, beauty, lineage, wealth, or success. The Sahasranāma accordingly identifies these defects through distinct names.

Likewise, the present name should not be merged into the following name, Madanāśinī. Nirmadā describes the Goddess's own freedom from mada; the next name speaks of the act of destroying mada. Preserving this distinction reveals the careful structure of the Sahasranāma: first it states that the Goddess is entirely beyond a defect, and then it names Her power to remove that defect.

From the contemplative perspective of Śrīvidyā, Nirmadā permits a restrained philosophical indication. Mada depends upon a sense of separation: “this power is mine,” “this achievement is mine,” or “because of this I am superior to another.” In a vision that recognises Parāmbā as the Self of all, such separate superiority loses its foundation. Whatever power exists has its source in Her, and whatever knowledge shines is illumined through Her. Her freedom from pride is therefore entirely consistent with Her fullness.

In offering Nirmadāyai namaḥ, the sādhaka need not pray to regard ability, knowledge, position, possessions, or spiritual practice as worthless. The fitting orientation is not to convert what has been received into an isolated claim of personal greatness, disconnected from the Goddess's grace and the many causes that made it possible. Ability may be used well without looking down upon others; knowledge may increase without becoming separated from humility.

Remembrance of this name can be especially meaningful when success begins to produce excessive attachment to one's own importance. The sādhaka may pray to Parāmbā: let achievement remain, but not pride; let ability remain, but not its use to diminish others; let honour come, but let the inner being not become intoxicated by it and forget its source.

Nirmadā is Śrī Lalitāmbikā in whom mada is entirely absent. Infinite beauty, knowledge, power and sovereignty are Hers, yet the pride that may arise from such excellences never touches Her. Her freedom from pride shows that fullness has no need to proclaim its own importance. Nirmadāyai namaḥ is the salutation to Parāmbā whose sovereignty is complete and whose nature is wholly beyond the intoxication of pride.
